description: "Remote ancient palace ruins in Saudi Arabia's Al-Aflaj governorate, tied by local tradition to the classic 'Layla and Majnun' love story."
---
In the village of Al-Ghayl, roughly 300 kilometers south of Riyadh, a mud-and-stone palace crumbles atop a hill above the Al-Aflaj governorate, its walls slowly dissolving back into the landscape that shaped them. Local tradition ties the region to Qays ibn al-Mulawwah and Layla al-Amiriyah, the 7th-century lovers whose story became "Layla and Majnun," the Arabian precursor to Romeo and Juliet. Few tourists ever make the trip.
