description: "11,700 free, downloadable, remixable photos from John Margolies' decades-long archive of playful roadside Americana — teapot-shaped gas stations, doughnut-shaped shops, hand-painted signage."
---
Art historian John Margolies spent four decades touring America's back highways with a Guggenheim grant, photographing the country's most joyfully impractical architecture before it vanished — gas stations shaped like teapots, restaurants shaped like doughnuts and fish, mini-golf courses, theme motels. The Library of Congress now hosts 11,700 of his images free to download, use, and remix, no permission required.
