description: "One of only two Japanese gardens in Ireland, in the seaside town of Tramore — an homage to the writer Lafcadio Hearn, who bridged Victorian Ireland and Meiji Japan."
---
Lafcadio Hearn spent boyhood summers in the seaside town of Tramore before becoming, decades later, the writer who introduced Meiji-era Japan to the West — celebrated there under the name Koizumi Yakumo. Tramore's 2.5-acre garden traces his life across eleven distinct sections, from Victorian and Greek gardens through to an authentic Japanese garden with a Niwamon gate and Sori Bashi bridge. It's one of only two Japanese gardens in the country.
