One correction to make up front: this is a WWII tool, not a WWI one. Böker's own product page is explicit that the WWI-era Imperial Army never issued a standard pocket knife at all — it was the Wehrmacht, in WWII, that carried this folding cable knife, and not just in the signal corps: pioneers, mechanized-division mechanics, the Kriegsmarine, and the Luftwaffe all used it. The pattern outlived the war it was designed for — it's still produced today to the same technical spec (TL 5110-0011, NATO supply number 5110-12-120-0816) for the Bundeswehr, and became a civilian favorite among electricians and hobbyist whittlers in the decades since.
The reason it existed at all is the V-notch cut into the spine near the pivot: a deeply concave, serrated edge sized to bite through cable insulation and stop before it nicks the wire underneath. That's still a genuinely useful shape for stripping small-gauge wire today. Böker also markets the same notch as a bushcraft feature — its product page explicitly recommends it for "striking sparks with Pyrophoric-Cer fire steel," so the find's fire-steel-striker claim checks out against Böker's own copy, rather than being an invented detail.
The reissue is a close copy in dimensions, not just concept: a 3.39-inch, 0.09-inch-thick 440A stainless blade (swapped in for the wartime carbon-steel original, for rust resistance), a 7.71-inch overall length, and 3.17 ounces. The handle is rosewood, not ebony — Böker's own spec sheet lists "Rosewood," and the reddish-brown wood in its product photos backs that up, even though some retail listings call it ebony. It opens manually via nail nick onto stainless liners with the pattern's characteristic four grooves, and it's made in Asia rather than Germany. At $49.95 direct from Böker, it lands at the top of the find's estimated range.
The honest limitations: it's a slipjoint, not a locking knife, so it's not built for anything that fights back — no batoning, no prying, nothing that risks closing on your fingers. The V-notch is shaped for 13mm insulation, not general-purpose cutting, and the fire-steel trick is a "tip" in Böker's own marketing, not the tool's designed function, so don't expect it to throw sparks as reliably as a dedicated ferro-rod striker. This is fundamentally a heritage piece — a well-made one, faithful down to the liner grooves — for people who want a slice of Wehrmacht field-kit history in their pocket, not a daily-carry workhorse.

Vitrelle is Corelle's proprietary process: two outer layers of tempered glass fused around a thin inner layer, laminated under heat and pressure rather than molded as a single piece. The BuyItForLife appeal isn't a manufacturer claim, it's the pattern of owner reports: people keep this exact white Corelle for 10, 15, 20+ years through moves, roommates, and kids, replacing pieces individually rather than the whole set, because Winter Frost White has stayed in continuous production essentially unchanged. Reddit's 15-year account is one data point in that pattern, not a lab result, but it's a common one — chip-free longevity is the recurring theme in owner threads, and open stock means a chipped piece is a $68 replacement, not a whole new set.
Two honest limitations worth knowing before buying. First, Vitrelle is chip-*resistant*, not indestructible — when it does eventually fail, thin tempered glass tends to fail all at once rather than chipping gradually, and a shattered piece can scatter into a lot of small, sharp fragments, a known trait of tempered-glass dinnerware in general. Second, the laminate is vulnerable to thermal shock: Corelle's own instructions warn against adding liquid to a hot piece, setting a hot piece on a wet or cold surface, or handling it with a wet or cold cloth, since the sudden temperature swing can crack or shatter it — freezer-to-oven in one step is the classic way to break a piece that would otherwise last decades. Wyrm Math is built on wyrm-math, an open-source (MIT-licensed) symbolic algebra engine from developer Tony Di Croce, built around one invariant: legal moves are possible, illegal moves are impossible. Equations aren't checked after the fact — they're only ever transformed by rewrite rules, so every state you can reach is sound by construction. That's a different model than the "type an answer, get flagged wrong" tools most algebra software uses: instead of catching the mistake, Wyrm Math makes the mistake impossible to make in the first place.
The mechanism is that the engine enumerates every legal move available for the equation on screen — drag a term across the equals sign, tap an exponent to expand it, pull a shared factor out of two terms — and hands the interface a gesture anchor (a handle and a valid drop target) for each one. There's no illegal target to drop on, so a move you can't legally make just has nowhere to go. Around 25 built-in rules cover linear equations, combining like terms, distribution, fractions, exponent laws, sign-aware inequalities, and quadratics (x² = 9 branches cleanly into x = 3 or x = -3, with both live as navigable states).
"Conditionally sound" is what keeps the engine from being too rigid to be useful: moves that are only valid under a condition — dividing by b requires b ≠ 0 — or that can introduce extraneous solutions — squaring both sides — aren't forbidden outright. Their conditions become visible "Assumptions" that travel alongside the equation through the derivation instead of silently invalidating your work.
The engine is free and MIT-licensed — pure TypeScript, zero dependencies, no DOM, so it can run in a browser, in Node, or inside a native app shell. What actually ships is Wyrm Math, a $4.99 one-time-purchase app confirmed live on both the App Store and Google Play (no subscription, no ads, no tracking), plus a free browser demo at the project's GitHub Pages site if you want to try the dragging before buying. It's a solo/indie project and scopes itself accordingly: coverage tops out around algebra I/II territory rather than a full curriculum, and a "Solution Search" feature visible in the app is still marked beta.
