When the course closed and redevelopment came for the lot, Jacksonville locals pushed to keep him standing; the new owners obliged, enlisting University of North Florida students to repaint him bright orange in 2007. He's been glowing red-eyed over the strip-mall parking lot ever since.

Bogomir Ecker started the machine on December 19, 1996, self-powered by nothing but water and gravity, and built to keep dripping at roughly 10 millimeters of growth per century until the year 2496.

Thru-hikers are attempting it start to finish for the first time this year.
