description: "In Vignale Monferrato, Piedmont, Luciano Serpentello covered his house's facade in individually designed ceramic tiles starting in 1925, and no two are alike."
---
Starting in 1925, a man named Luciano Serpentello began covering his house in the Piedmont village of Vignale Monferrato with ceramic tiles — not a repeating pattern, but a mosaic where he designed every single tile by hand, so that no two anywhere on the facade match. Decades of one man's private, obsessive decorating turned an ordinary village house into the town's most photographed wall.
