Samuel Salcedo's heads lie half-sunk in the topiary of the Jardins d'Étretat, eyes shut, lips pushed out, one tongue stuck straight at whoever walks past. They are bedded into the clipped domes deliberately, to sit the way oysters sit in a bed — a nod to the oyster farm Marie Antoinette kept on this stretch of Normandy coast.
Samuel Salcedo's heads lie half-sunk in the topiary of the Jardins d'Étretat, eyes shut, lips pushed out, one tongue stuck straight at whoever walks past. The clipped domes around them are meant to read as seabed: the garden built this section as an echo of the oyster park below the cliffs, so the faces surface the way oysters sit in a bed.
