Nearly 1,800 permanent shops, and the hours worth seeing are the ones nobody schedules: a 2am fruit auction, fish descaled by hand, vendors spreading their goods across live train tracks and clearing them each time a train comes through. By mid-morning it has gone — stalls become parked cars, and the block goes back to being a district of newspapers and TV studios.
