tldraw: fact-check enriched the find — dual product (free whiteboard / source-available SDK), licensing corrected to the proprietary tldraw license (not MIT). Fresh first-party screenshot hero. Kartell Componibili: first review to carry amazonLink (genuine Kartell 4966/03, sold by Amazon) — exercises the new 'Also on Amazon' affiliate rendering end to end. New 'design' category.

# Daily finds — log

## 2026-06-21 — capture run (first run since 2026-05-06; ~6-week backlog)
Sources scanned: ~50 active (9 skipped per sources.json `fetch: skip`). 138 finds written after dedup against the 468-find / 39-review baseline. Run executed as a fan-out: 8 scanner subagents (one per source cluster) → central dedup/bar pass → 9 writer subagents/inline writers for files + hero fetch.
Productive sources: Web Curios (22), Recomendo (12), Wallpaper* Travel (9), icanhazdadjoke (9), AFAR (9), Wikiquote (8), Brett Terpstra (7), A.Word.A.Day (7), MoMA Design Store (6), Outlier (5), The Eclectic Light Company (4), Standard & Strange Journal (4), Kottke.org (4), Kikkerland (4), The Marginalian (3), MacStories (3), A Continuous Lean (3), Product Hunt (2), OSXDaily (2), Open Culture (2), Messy Nessy Chic (2), Hacker News — Show HN (2), Cool Tools (2), Uses This (1), Things Magazine (1), Six Colors (1), Quote Investigator (1), Daring Fireball — Linked List (1), Carryology (1), Boutique Homes (1).

**Major fetch regression — all Reddit endpoints blocked.** r/macapps, r/shortcuts, and r/dadjokes all returned an HTML login/rate-limit wall (and 403 to WebFetch) for the `top/.json` endpoints this run, even with the Safari UA — zero Reddit-sourced finds. Reddit appears to have tightened bot detection since 2026-05-06; the curl+JSON path that worked every prior run is now dead. Needs an authenticated token or a different ingestion path before r/* sources are usable again. Dad-jokes fell back entirely to icanhazdadjoke; r/macapps and r/shortcuts produced nothing.
Other blocked/broken this run:
- **Cool Material** — now a full Cloudflare JS challenge on ALL URLs (homepage + both Black Book month pages). Previously curl-friendly; regressed. Candidate for `fetch: skip`.
- **Werd.com** — HTTP 403 to both curl and WebFetch (was `webfetch` before). Regressed.
- **Atlas Obscura** — full Cloudflare block (genuine challenge page, no content body — worse than the prior 5471-byte stub). `fetch: skip` long overdue.
- **One Thing Well** — dormant: newest retrievable post is Jan 2023. Likely defunct.
- **Tools and Toys** — no 2026 content; newest posts are 2024. On indefinite hiatus.
- **This Is Why I'm Broke** — confirmed Angular SPA, empty template.
- **Unusual Hotels of the World** — confirmed ~4KB SPA shell.
- **Snow Peak** — product grid JS-rendered; no named SS26 apparel extractable.
- **StyleForum** — readable via curl but no single convergent buyable pick surfaced.
- **Kevin Kelly — thetechnium** — 2 posts, both meta-essays, no product candidates.
- **Roadtrippers / The Outbound Collective** — generic/mass-tourism canon only.
Workarounds that worked: **MoMA Design Store** and **Kikkerland** HTML collection pages are now Shopify SPAs (nav-only), but `/collections/new/products.json` returns the full grid — use the JSON endpoint going forward. **TidBITS** issue-level pages 403, but individual article URLs are fetchable via curl. **Brett Terpstra** Web Excursions (May 11, May 23) were the richest single vein — followed and parsed.
Skipped (per sources.json): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.
Kikkerland Amazon policy applied: 4 new items verified present on Kikkerland's own Amazon storefront ("Visit the Kikkerland Store") and linked via `amazon.com/dp/<asin>` — Bee Float Island (B0GS67PGMJ), Cappy the Capybara Planter (B0GS67XJC6), Axolotl Punch Needle Kit (B0GR8N1C47), Dachshund Trinket Tray (B0GR94FPFW). Amazon `/s` search returned results cleanly this run (no CAPTCHA). Deduped out as existing finds: Cat Watering Can, Light Up Pen/Pencil, Woodpecker Garden Shears. Croissant Bath Rug stays dropped (prior no-Amazon-match decision).

### Hero coverage
- Heroes saved: 68 of 138. The remaining 70 are mostly intentionally text-only (16 of 19 quotes + all 9 dad-jokes) plus general-delight web toys / SPA app pages with no usable og:image (feed-the-cat, rarefilmm, map-of-metal, weather-rothkos, meditype, museum-of-the-human-web, garden-of-flowers-letterpress, play-it-by-trust, swf-rodeo, your-internet-radio-dial, tiny-world-builder, etc.) and several Brett Terpstra picks (his blog has no og:image cards).
- Notable hero patterns: MoMA/Kikkerland Shopify `cdn.shopify.com/.../files/*.jpg` came down clean (2040² and 750² respectively). Wallpaper `cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net` and AFAR `afar.brightspotcdn.com` reliable. Map of Physics fell back to YouTube `hqdefault.jpg` (maxres was the 120×90 placeholder). socotra-island recovered via the AFAR article og:image; villa-fayoum recovered via the bare Wix static URL (the `/v1/fit/...avif` transform endpoint returns text/plain).
- Hero failures (no image): silentknight-3 (only a 1400×122 banner in the post), mandai-rainforest-resort-singapore (Banyan Tree exposes no og:image / 403), nightstick (Amazon image-fetch blocked), cosmos-visual-discovery / learn-ai-layer-by-layer / imdb-theatrical-stream-list / writer-deck-resource-list / ringconn-gen-3 / far-out-company (JS-rendered or logo-only og:image).
### Source-field fix
The travel writer batch initially wrote the display domain (wallpaper.com, afar.com, boutique-homes.com, egyptbeyond.com) into the `source:` field instead of the sources.json name; corrected post-write to "Wallpaper* Travel", "AFAR", and "Boutique Homes" (villa-fayoum, surfaced via an AFAR article, attributed to AFAR). All 138 `source:` values now match a sources.json `name` exactly.
### New source nominees
11 this run (see candidate-sources.md): crossplay.news, Thought Asylum, Klipy, Bird History (Substack), Deepculture, nicoledonut.com, Herb Lester Associates, Neal.fun, Pippin Barr, Soph Warnes, Jack Weiss.

## 2026-05-06 — review: felo-ergonic-screwdriver-set
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-03, source: Tools and Toys. Reused the find's `hero.jpg` (the six-piece set, two-tone soft handles fanned beside the chrome shafts). New category `tools` introduced — `kit` is reserved for preparedness/glovebox objects (valchoose-barf-bags), `kitchen` is too narrow for a workshop tool, and none of the software-leaning categories fit a hand-tool. `tools` is now the natural home for future workshop/hand-tool graduates. Tags merge the find's set with `workshop` and `household`. Registered in `src/lib/hero.ts` per build-review Step 6.
## 2026-05-06 — review: gum-shell
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-03, source: One Thing Well. Reused the find's `hero.png` (1280×650 terminal screenshot of the `choose` component). New category `terminal` introduced — `automation` (workflow runners like SmartMover) doesn't fit a shell-script library; `apex-markdown-processor` is parked in `writing` because its prose-rendering virtue dominates, but `terminal` is now the natural home for future TUI/CLI graduates. Tags merge the find's set with `charm` and `cli`. Slug stays `gum-shell` while `name: "gum"` is preserved (lowercase) — keeps URL disambiguation while honoring the project's actual name. Registered in `src/lib/hero.ts` per build-review Step 6; verified the `/grid/` and `/` tiles ship the hashed `_astro/hero.BWXhSEZJ_*.webp`. Note: `gum-shell` is also referenced in the `2026-05-06-things-in-the-terminal` superpost — the superpost's grid card now links to the find page, which forwards to the review.

## 2026-05-06 — review: finalist
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-03, source: Daring Fireball — Linked List. Reused the find's `hero.png` (2000×1391 iPhone screenshot of a daily list with carry-forward arrows). New category `planning` introduced — `journal` is retrospective and `writing` is for text tools, neither fit forward-looking task management; `planning` is the natural home for future planner graduates (e.g. hour-by-hour). Tags merge the find's set with `focus`. Registered in `src/lib/hero.ts` per build-review Step 6; verified the `/grid/` and `/` tiles ship the hashed `_astro/hero.DSDkg9Yi_*.webp`. Note: `finalist` is also referenced in the `2026-05-06-constrain-the-surface` superpost — the superpost's grid card now links to the find page, which forwards to the review.

## 2026-05-06 — review: valchoose-barf-bags
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-05, source: Reader suggestion. Reused the find's `hero.jpg` (1500×1496 `71-zVovnCEL._AC_SL1500_.jpg` — clean studio shot of the blue bag held open by its white plastic ring). New category `kit` introduced — first physical preparedness/glovebox object in the review pool, didn't fit `kitchen` or any of the software-leaning categories. Tags merge the find's set with `household`. Registered in `src/lib/hero.ts` per the new build-review Step 6; verified the tile on `/grid/` ships the `<img>` with hashed `_astro/hero.DfDvIZ_M_*.webp`.

## 2026-05-06 — review: tablepro
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-06, source: r/macapps. Reused the find's `hero.png` (1650×930 SQL editor screenshot from the Reddit launch gallery). Category `indie` (matches blip, sindre-sorhus-older-mac-apps — open-source single-developer Mac apps). `link:` rewritten from the Reddit launch post to the canonical homepage `tablepro.app`; tags merge the find's set with `macos` and `mcp`.

## 2026-05-06 — capture run (evening sweep)
Sources scanned: 60 total — 25 hits across 14 sources, ~28 unproductive (mostly same-day repeats from morning run), 8 blocked/broken (same set as morning), 9 skipped (per sources.json `fetch: skip`). Net 25 new finds after dedup against the 198 morning-run baseline.
Productive sources: r/macapps (4), Hacker News — Show HN (1), Brett Terpstra (3 from May 6 Web Excursions), Wallpaper* Travel (3), Boutique Homes (1), The Outbound Collective (1), Standard & Strange Journal (1), Outlier (1), Messy Nessy Chic (1, via Vol. 772 finally substantive), Things Magazine (1, owls-in-towels), Open Culture (1), Uncommon Goods (3), r/dadjokes (3), icanhazdadjoke (1).
Unproductive but live (same-day no-change since morning): MacStories (same Astropad/Pedometer 8/Apple Frames 4 set), Tools and Toys (same 8 visible — all already captured this week), Six Colors (same Hovercraft/Mister Plimsoll/storage-tip set, all captured), Daring Fireball (chess-peace/1d-chess/noir-japanese-cookies/express-transit-directory all captured; new ScopeXR is news-style, Adobe/Photoshop critiques are essays not picks), One Thing Well (top 10 unchanged: Linky/FrogFind/One Thing/yt-dlp/Cilicon/Heatwave/nom/gum/Smol Pub/Newsboat — all captured), Kottke (same Curtis supercut / Bacon / Krakauer / Murderbot / Fred Again / Eric Rohman set; only new addition is Eric Rohman Artvee gallery — passed as not "thing to use/visit"), Cool Tools (same Mick Rock / Frequent Fliers / Embassy roundup), Recomendo (substack feed lastBuildDate 2026-05-07 but most recent post is still issue #513 from 2026-05-03 = morning's #513 already captured 2/3 picks), A.Word.A.Day (same Freud-affections-spending quote captured this morning), The Marginalian (silphium/Nussbaum/Pythagoras already captured this morning; new May-5 Aztec/Humboldt/Darwin Emoji piece passed — quote too generic), Quote Investigator (same Reeve/Dyer/Exclamation/Stendhal/Lobsters/Feet-Knees set — Stendhal already captured 2026-05-03; "Feet/Knees" anonymous origin failed bar; "Lobsters" too archaic), Cool Material (homepage = same 6 Nike/Material discount listicles as morning), Werd (same listicle pattern), A Continuous Lean (still December 2025), Put This On / Carryology / Standard & Strange (same posts as morning except S&S Hendrix Park surfaced this run, captured), Eclectic Light (same medium-and-message-miniature / metadata / XProtect / Perseus set), Brett Terpstra Web Excursions had 3 new picks not visible in morning's index-only scan (ScreenKite, Compacto, ticker; SitApp duplicated GooseNeck which is more interesting; CleanShot X is mainstream/affiliate sponsor; fontlet too dev-niche), Dr. Drang / OSXDaily / AFAR / Roadtrippers (same content as morning), Wallpaper Travel surfaced 3 new vs morning (Bar di Bello, Idalia at Pillar Hall, Orient Express Corinthian — morning only listed already-captured Kai Hakone), Boutique Homes (same 5 unchanged + 1 new — Casa Siza by Álvaro Siza captured), Outbound Collective (Cathedral Park new), Outlier (Sunwarp Sunguard new since morning's Injex/Cannabiscotton/Ramielust set), Snow Peak (skipped this run — morning's 28-product extraction was deemed "deep-dive run" and not repeated), Uses This (skipped — same index-page pattern), Hacker News Show HN scan: only DoodleMate passed beyond morning's already-captured top 3; Hallucinopedia rejected as authoritative-fake-encyclopedia, doesn't fit delight brief without harm; rest of top 25 fail same dev-niche / AI-marketing bar as morning. Product Hunt skipped (same AI-marketing pattern verified across 4 runs).
Blocked or broken this run: TidBITS / Reader's Digest Jokes (skip per sources.json — confirmed), 9to5Mac (skipped — already pulled per morning post-run note), Atlas Obscura (Cloudflare 5471-byte stub identical to morning — third consecutive run with stub, `fetch: skip` is now thoroughly overdue; flipping next prune), Kevin Kelly thetechnium (skipped this run — morning content unproductive, no fresh post expected within the same day), MoMA Design Store (skipped this run — morning regression confirmed; should be migrated to JSON endpoint per morning's note), This Is Why I'm Broke (skipped this run — morning Angular-SPA confirmation), Web Curios (most recent post still 24/04/26 — no May 2026 issue yet), Westsider article (HTTP 403 to curl — couldn't grab a hero photo of Andrew's Honey Shop from the source; fell through to skipping the hero rather than substituting a generic logo). Reddit JSON endpoints continued to work cleanly throughout.
Amazon CAPTCHA still fires on `/s/` search URLs even with full headers + compression (verified — page returned the akamai bm-verify interstitial); direct `/dp/<asin>/` URLs continue to return clean HTML. **Decision**: skipped Kikkerland this run rather than risk capturing items without verifying Amazon-storefront presence. The morning post-run policy ("only keep Kikkerland finds whose product is listed under Kikkerland's own Amazon storefront") cannot be reliably enforced when search is CAPTCHA-blocked. Pattern for future runs: either pre-cache Kikkerland's Amazon brand-store ASIN list, or move the storefront verification to a different Amazon endpoint (the brand-store landing at `/stores/Kikkerland/page/<id>` is a known alternative).
Skipped (per sources.json): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.

### Hero coverage (evening)
- Heroes saved: 20 of 25 attempted (5 text-only: 4 jokes + 0 quotes this run; andrews-honey-shop fell through to no-hero).
- All og:image fetches succeeded on first pass except Andrew's Honey Shop. Westsider article (the Messy Nessy linked source) returned HTTP 403 to curl with Safari UA, blocking access to whatever photo accompanied the article. The shop's own site uses a generic Unsplash bee photo as homepage hero (`bianca-ackermann-ys-sZZkdT1s-unsplash.jpg`) and an SVG-script logo as og:image — neither passes the skill rule against generic logos. Logged as failure; tile will render hero-less per text-only conventions until a graduate-to-review run can sub in a real photo.
- chuck-jones-dot-and-line: YouTube `maxresdefault.jpg` returned a 120×90 placeholder; fell through to `hqdefault.jpg` (480×360) which passed the 400px-long-edge bar. Pattern: Open Culture's embedded YouTube videos sometimes have only HQ-default thumbnails available, never maxres. Worth noting in the skill: try `hqdefault.jpg` as the second pass after `maxresdefault.jpg` returns the placeholder.
- ticker (rhsev/ticker): used the README's inline `demo.gif` from `raw.githubusercontent.com/rhsev/ticker/main/demo.gif` rather than the GitHub OG card (which carries the repo-tagline overlay). Confirms the morning's pattern: README inline images via raw.githubusercontent.com are the canonical hero fallback for GitHub finds whose OG card has overlay text.
- Reddit r/macapps galleries: gooseneck used the first `media_metadata` frame at 2940×1912 (clean motion-sensor schematic + screenshots collage); ikoi used a 2558×1716 frame (energy-checkin UI screenshot); avocado used the post's `external-preview.redd.it` URL (1920×1080 video frame, since the v.redd.it stream isn't a still); smartpic similarly used `external-preview.redd.it` (960×624, just barely above the 400px bar — accepted).
- Wallpaper srcset/cdn-mos pattern: all three Wallpaper picks (bar-di-bello, idalia-pillar-hall, orient-express-corinthian) had the og:image at `cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/<hash>.jpg` and they all came down clean at 1540–2000px. Confirms Wallpaper's CDN is reliable for hero retrieval.
- Casa Siza: `og:image` resolved to `ik.imagekit.io/boutiquehomes/.../casa-siza_apartment_mexico-city_interior-living-room-art-piece.jpg` at 1920×1280, served clean.
- Hendrix Park: Standard & Strange Shopify CDN served the article OG at 1280×720 clean. The image is a YouTube `maxresdefault` thumbnail (`maxresdefault-7.jpg`) that S&S clearly grabbed when embedding their workshop tour video — adequate for a tile.
- Sunwarp Sunguard: Outlier's Sanity-hosted product image (2000×2000 square) is the canonical hero for the product page. Outlier consistently uses Sanity for product imagery.
- Owls in Towels: og:image was a 1200×630 PNG hosted on the site's own `/content/media/` path — clean.
- Hero failures (1): andrews-honey-shop (Westsider 403; canonical site has no usable photo of the storefront).
### New source nominees (evening)
3 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- Outdoor Research Infinite Guarantee (`outdoorresearch.com`) — surfaced via r/BuyItForLife reader experience post. Their warranty policy is itself a noteworthy purchase-philosophy pick, but the canonical URL was elusive in this run; logging as nominee for a dedicated Infinite-Guarantee feature once the right URL is identified.
- Westsider Rag (`westsiderag.com`) — Upper West Side neighborhood blog that surfaced the Andrew's Honey Shop bee-distribution piece. Hyper-local NYC reporting is rarely a unique source category.
- 22RE (`22re.com`) — design firm behind Bar di Bello interiors. A potential ongoing source for design-led restaurants and rooms.
### Source maintenance notes (evening)
- **Atlas Obscura**: third consecutive run with the 5471-byte Cloudflare stub (2026-05-05, 2026-05-06 morning, 2026-05-06 evening). `fetch: skip` is now overdue past the patience threshold — flip next prune.
- **Kikkerland Amazon-policy automation**: until Amazon `/s/` search reliably returns content, Kikkerland captures will need either a pre-cached brand-store ASIN list or migration to the brand-store landing endpoint. This run skipped the Kikkerland scan rather than risk capturing items without storefront verification.
- **YouTube thumbnails**: prefer `hqdefault.jpg` as a fallback when `maxresdefault.jpg` returns the 120×90 placeholder. Pattern confirmed twice now (boards-of-canada-b-sides-mix 2026-05-05 used maxres successfully; chuck-jones-dot-and-line 2026-05-06 evening had to fall through).
- **Westsider Rag**: HTTP 403 to curl with Safari UA. Add to the skill's known-403 list or wrap with a different UA if WebFetch ever needs to access neighborhood-blog sources. The article was readable via WebFetch in the morning's scan but the image fetch needs the raw HTML.
- **Reddit ?t=day vs ?t=week**: this evening run's 25 picks included 4 r/macapps items that had been published since the morning sweep (which used `?t=week`). Pattern: for same-day re-runs, switching to `?t=day` surfaces fresh content that's risen above the noise floor in the last few hours but isn't yet in the weekly top — worth keeping in the skill's "evening sweep" playbook.
- **Brett Terpstra Web Excursions**: the morning run's index-only scan missed the May 6 Web Excursions content because the index page only lists titles. WebFetching the post URL directly surfaces its 5–6 contained picks. Pattern: when the most recent Brett Terpstra post is a Web Excursions, follow the link and parse — three of this run's captures came from a single Web Excursions post.
## 2026-05-06 — capture run
Sources scanned: 60 total — 28 hits across 14 sources, ~26 unproductive-but-live, 8 blocked/broken, 9 skipped (per sources.json `fetch: skip`).
Productive sources: r/macapps (4), Daring Fireball — Linked List (1), Six Colors (3), Hacker News — Show HN (3), r/shortcuts (1), Roadtrippers Magazine (1), The Marginalian (3), A.Word.A.Day (1), Recomendo (2), Cool Material (2), Kikkerland (2), Uncommon Goods (1), r/dadjokes (3), icanhazdadjoke (1).
Unproductive but live: MacStories (Astropad Workbench / Cronos game / Pedometer 8 / Apple Frames 4 — all already captured or fail bar as too-mainstream/news), Tools and Toys (all 7 visible posts already captured 2026-05-03→05-05 run), One Thing Well (top 8 already captured Linky/FrogFind/One Thing/yt-dlp/Cilicon/Heatwave/nom/gum across prior runs), Kottke.org (week dominated by Curtis supercut, Bacon docs, Krakauer, Murderbot recut, Fred Again 108-hour video — all interesting reads but not "things to use/visit"), Cool Tools (this week's top three are "What's in my NOW?" interview with Erik Schneider, the Mick Rock/Horrorstör mini-pair, and Frequent Fliers travel — descriptions too thin for individual product picks), Carryology (Bellroy x Carryology Sling collab and Warp&Weft fabric-essay — descriptions still too thin), Werd (entirely listicles), A Continuous Lean (only December 2025 SIGNALS post still on homepage), Put This On (Inside Track eBay roundups + J. Press style drawings — no isolated picks), Standard & Strange Journal (continued Field Guide essays on jungle jacket variations / GI pockets / military jacket warmth — historical not productized), Outlier (same Injex/Cannabiscotton/Ramielust/Pants drops surfaced past three runs), Eclectic Light Company (week dominated by metadata-ignore + XProtect updates + macOS VM audio-video sync — system-internals reads, not picks), Brett Terpstra (Apex callout support + Web Excursions + already-captured Timelined/TerminalWidget/Apex), Dr. Drang — leancrew.com (3 posts, all iOS Mail blocking commentary + AirPort Express nostalgia + Krugman graphing math — no isolated apps), OSXDaily (MacBook Neo vs Air, M4 iPad Air deal, RC builds — generic reporting; Notepad++ already captured; Calendar Inbox already captured; Secure Erase already captured), AFAR (Mendocino state parks expansion, Chicago/USVI/Wyoming/Fort Myers — generic destinations), Wallpaper* Travel (Capella Kyoto / Hotel Villa Colette / .Here / Azuma Farm / Fife Arms all already captured 2026-05-04 + 05-05), Boutique Homes (same 5 properties since 2026-05-05 — Casa Nano 2.0 already captured, others have descriptions too thin), Things Magazine (link roundups only), Open Culture (medieval Europe video, Confidence cartoon, Egyptian honey, Bacon, Stallone Rambo recut — interesting facts but not "things"; ashes-vinyl already captured as and-vinyly), Quote Investigator (Toni Morrison's "barefaced" most recent — accepted but quote attribution is "unknown poet" so editorial value is thin; other 4 already captured 2026-05-05), Messy Nessy Chic (Vol. 772 page is a stub; Vol. 771 items all captured 2026-05-05), The Outbound Collective (only 2 new of 6 — The Narrows + Subway Bottom Up + Havasu — but all are mass-tourism canon Zion/Grand Canyon spots; remaining 3 already captured), Hacker News — Show HN beyond top 3 (Tilde.run / Hallucinopedia / PHP-fts / Templatical / Flightsim / AION / Pay.sh / Vibeguard / Tuiql / Guten — fail bar as too-niche-developer or too-AI-marketing), Product Hunt (Kanwas/Shadow/Superset/Pay.sh/Gyro/Databox/Alumni/Contrario/WOZCODE — 9 of 10 are AI marketing copy; Wispr Flow already mainstream), Snow Peak (28 products extracted via curl — Land Lock/Land Nest/Amenity Dome/Field Barista Kettle/Kitchen Mesh Case/Shelter Inner Duo/Low Beach Chair/Micro Hozuki — solid catalog but descriptions thin without WebFetch enrichment; reserve for a dedicated Snow Peak deep-dive run), Uses This (5 most recent interviews don't list specific tools on the index page — same pattern as last 3 runs), Roadtrippers other 5 (Monument Valley/Hearst/Zion/Coney Island — mass-tourism canon; only Weeki Wachee passes the bar).
Blocked or broken this run: TidBITS (skip per sources.json — confirmed unchanged), Reader's Digest Jokes (skip per sources.json — confirmed), 9to5Mac `/category/apple-tips/` (404 — same instability as `/guides/macos-tips/` last run; per-category subpaths remain unstable), Atlas Obscura (Cloudflare challenge — 5471-byte stub identical to 2026-05-05 run; the regression sticks. Skill note from 2026-05-05 said "fetch: skip is overdue" — confirmed second run in a row), Kevin Kelly thetechnium (curl returned 99KB this run; the markup pattern is `<h2>` (no `entry-title` class) wrapping post titles — 12 visible. Most recent post "Our Uncertain Uncertainties" was retrievable via WebFetch but is a Kelly meta-essay on uncertainty, not a "find" — the source remains workable for harvesting but content this run wasn't productive), MoMA Design Store `/collections/new` (regressed — last run 2026-05-05 had 15 products via curl; this run only nav anchors + a single E-Gift Card entry. Likely Shopify's anti-bot got tighter; consider switching to `/collections/new-arrivals.json` if available), This Is Why I'm Broke (homepage is now an Angular SPA with no rendered content via curl; only the empty template ships — fetch needs to switch to client-rendered scraping or skip), Cool Material `/feature/black-book-april-2026/` worked this run (last run user cancelled the fetch) — yielded 10 products of which 2 passed the bar.
Skipped (per sources.json): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.

### Hero coverage
- Heroes saved: 20 of 29 attempted (9 text-only: 4 jokes + 3 quotes + 1 essay-via-Recomendo + 1 deep-link-URL find).
- All og:image fetches succeeded on first pass except mac-juice-monitor (GitHub OG card carried repo-tagline overlay text per skill rules — replaced by fetching `https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/<id>` from the README's "Screenshots" section, yielding a clean 1424×1024 menu-bar screenshot).
- Pattern unlock: **GitHub `user-attachments/assets/<uuid>` URLs are publicly fetchable** without the `private-user-images.githubusercontent.com` redirect — those uuids in a README's `![]()` syntax resolve directly via curl with a Safari UA. Worth adding to the skill: when a GitHub OG card is rejected for overlay text, the README's first inline image (rendered via the user-attachments redirect) is the canonical fallback.
- Pattern unlock: **Shopify `cdn/shop/files` images** for storefronts that strip product imagery from collection pages can still be reached via the brand's own CDN host — Stoumen's collection page only exposed a logo as og:image, but the membership page's inline `<img>` tags listed all 23 product bottle shots; we picked the canonical Andrew Thomas Lee bottle shot.
- Hovercraft `og` URL: `https://sandwich.vision/hovercraft/og` returned content with no extension — `file` confirmed PNG, saved as `hero.png`.
- Reddit gallery and v.redd.it links: extrabar and revpdf used `external-preview.redd.it` URLs from the post's preview metadata; tablepro used the first `media_metadata` hi-res frame at 1650×930 from the gallery JSON.
- Marginalian: silphium had a custom WP-uploaded hero (`silphium_marginalian0.jpg` 925×486); Nussbaum and Pythagoras were stock author photos at 600×315 — adequate for tile use, not flagship.
- Weeki Wachee: Roadtrippers' `atlas-assets.roadtrippers.com` URL has resize parameters baked into the path; the 1200×630 variant came down clean.
- Hero failures: zero this run.
### New source nominees
4 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- Sandwich.vision — surfaced via Hovercraft. Production company / app studio with a deliberate, design-rich catalog.
- Lowtechguys.com — surfaced via Cling. Indie Mac developer + blog crossing into utility releases.
- Express Transit (the site) — surfaced via Six Colors recommendation. Travel-tip directory of Wallet-supported transit systems globally.
- Glenn Fleishman — glennf.com — surfaced via Mister Plimsoll. Long-running Apple-platform writer with an independent project index.
### Post-run editorial adjustments
- **Kikkerland captures must be Amazon-purchasable.** User policy this run: only keep Kikkerland finds whose product is listed under Kikkerland's own Amazon storefront, and rewrite `link:` to the Amazon ASIN URL so the affiliate handler tags it. This run: huckleberry-slingshot kept (ASIN B0GNJ8GCF5), bug-blaster kept (ASIN B0GS6F32CK), croissant-bath-rug **dropped** (no Kikkerland-branded match on Amazon — only off-brand croissant rugs surfaced). The two `kikkerland.com/products/...` links were swapped for `amazon.com/dp/<asin>` URLs; affiliate handler in `src/lib/affiliate.ts` tags at render time. Skill update candidate: when capturing from Kikkerland, search Amazon for each item before writing the find file, and use the Amazon URL as the canonical `link:` if a Kikkerland-branded result exists.
- **9to5Mac removed from sources.json.** Three consecutive runs of category-subpath instability (`/guides/macos-tips/`, `/guides/`, `/category/apple-tips/` all 404 or empty nav). User pulled the source.
### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **Atlas Obscura** confirmed `fetch: skip` overdue (2nd consecutive run with 5471-byte Cloudflare stub). Carrying forward from 2026-05-05's recommendation.
- **MoMA Design Store**: regressed this run vs 2026-05-05 (15 products → 1). The `/collections/new` HTML now has only nav anchors. Try `/collections/new.json` (Shopify's standard JSON endpoint) — most Shopify stores ship one even when the HTML is anti-bot.
- **This Is Why I'm Broke**: confirmed Angular SPA — homepage HTML is empty template. Either skip or accept that this source needs headless-browser scraping.
- **Kikkerland**: `/collections/new` worked this run (53 products extracted) — update sources.json `fetchUrl` to `https://www.kikkerland.com/collections/new` (singular) and the source becomes reliably productive.
- **Uncommon Goods**: `/new` continues to work (15 products this run, same as 2026-05-05) — update sources.json `fetchUrl` formally.
- **A.Word.A.Day**: the curl + grep approach for "Thought for Today" worked cleanly this run (full quote extracted, untruncated). Pattern: `curl … wordsmith.org/words/today.html | grep -A8 "THOUGHT FOR TODAY"`.
- **Cool Material**: `/feature/black-book-<month>-<year>/` is the productive entry point — the homepage and `/gear/` continue to be too noisy. Worth pinning sources.json `fetchUrl` to a monthly-updated Black Book pattern.
- **Reddit `gallery` posts**: when `url` is `reddit.com/gallery/<id>`, the canonical media-metadata path in JSON is `[0].data.children[0].data.media_metadata.<imgid>.s.u` — preview.redd.it URL with width up to 1650. Worked clean for tablepro this run.

## 2026-05-05 — review: smartmover-shortcut
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-05, source: r/shortcuts. Reused the find's `hero.jpg` (iPhone screenshot of the shortcut's main-menu — Whats in the box / View all boxes / Manage items / Manage boxes / Generate labels / About / EXIT). New category `automation` introduced — none of the existing review categories (history, indie, input, interface, journal, kitchen, screenshots, writing) fit an Apple Shortcut, and `automation` is the natural home for future Shortcuts/AppleScript/Hammerspoon graduates. Tags merge the find's set with `ios` and `routinehub`.

## 2026-05-05 — find: valchoose-barf-bags
Single user-suggested find: Valchoose 14-pack 1000mL hospital-grade disposable barf bags (Amazon ASIN B083J2S3Q6). Source: Reader suggestion. Topic: tools.
Hero retrieved on second pass (1500×1496 `71-zVovnCEL._AC_SL1500_.jpg` from `m.media-amazon.com/images/I/`, clean studio shot with no overlay text). Pattern unlock: Amazon's CAPTCHA stub goes away when curl is invoked with the full browser header set — `Accept`, `Accept-Language`, `Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate, br`, plus `--compressed` and the Mac Safari UA. With that combination the canonical product page returned 3.2 MB of HTML containing the embedded `colorImages.initial` JSON, from which the first `hiRes` URL is the canonical main shot. Update the daily-finds skill: when Amazon shows a CAPTCHA to the bare UA, retry with full headers + compression before falling through to "no hero". Two of the six hi-res variants in the gallery had marketing overlay text ("A Little Expensive, But A Lot Better"; "Hospital Grade Emesis Bags") — skipped per skill rules.

## 2026-05-05 — review: monitorcontrol
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-05, source: Reader suggestion. Reused the find's `hero.png` (1648×1481 prefs-pane + menu-bar overlay screenshot showing sliders for an LG Ultra HD and the built-in Color LCD). Category `interface` (matches alt-tab, ice, alcove, dockdoor, folder-peek, antinote, monocle); tags merge the find's set with `external-monitor`, `brew`.

Unproductive but live: MacStories (all 3 items captured 2026-05-03/04), Tools and Toys (all 5 items already captured this past week), One Thing Well (top posts captured 2026-05-03; remaining items — Newsboat, yt-dlp — fail "delightful/unusual" bar as long-established TUI tools), Six Colors (Mac storage tip + travel-tech roundup, no isolated picks), Cool Tools (Frequent Fliers/Pants/Injection roundups; Embassy of the Free Mind and Circle to Search already captured), Cool Material (homepage only nav; /gear/ category yielded one "Black Book April 2026" roundup post — fetch interrupted), Carryology (only Bellroy x Carryology Sling collab and a fabric-essay piece — descriptions too thin), Put This On (eBay roundups only), Standard & Strange Journal (Field Guide essays only), Outlier (same Injex/Cannabiscotton/Ramielust drops as last run, descriptions still too thin), A Continuous Lean (2025 posts only), Snow Peak (SPA — only nav anchors and gift card extractable), Eclectic Light Company (metadata-management post adjacent to already-captured finder-tags-one-to-one find; VM internals too niche), Brett Terpstra (Tower Git GUI mention + sponsor posts + own apps Apex/Doing/Timelined already captured), Dr. Drang — leancrew.com (4 posts, all iOS Mail/contacts commentary, no specific app or automation), OSXDaily (Secure Erase + Clean Install + Compromised Passwords procedural tips, no qualifying picks), Werd (only listicles), Roadtrippers Magazine (Route 66/RV-resort sponsored content), AFAR (generic destinations — Chicago/Grand Canyon mass-market, Atacama already captured), Boutique Homes (5 properties returned with too-thin descriptions to write specific virtues; Casa Nano 2.0 already captured), Things Magazine (link roundups only), Open Culture (Egyptian-honey + explosive-medieval-cats articles — interesting facts but not "things to use/visit"; And Vinyly already captured), A.Word.A.Day (querimonious + truncated Christopher Morley war-hypnotism quote — partial fetch, line cuts off mid-sentence), Uses This (interview titles only on the index page — same pattern as last run).
Blocked or broken this run: TidBITS (WebFetch 403, persistent), Reader's Digest Jokes (WebFetch 403, persistent), 9to5Mac `/guides/macos-tips/` (404 this run — last run also had `/guides/` issue; the per-category subpath is unstable), Snow Peak `/collections/new-arrivals` (SPA, only 4 nav anchors), Atlas Obscura (regression — `articles` index now returns 5471-byte Cloudflare challenge body where last run returned full 503KB content; 4th-run trend is downward), Kevin Kelly thetechnium (h2.entry-title regex returned zero matches — markup likely changed since last successful run), Product Hunt (homepage truncated for WebFetch; `/leaderboard/daily/2026/5/4` worked but yielded only AI-marketing-copy products — no qualifying finds), Cool Material (`/gear/` category page only surfaced a single "Black Book April 2026" roundup; user cancelled the deep-dive fetch).
Skipped (per sources.json): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.

### Hero coverage
- Heroes saved: 17 of 20 attempted (7 quotes/jokes intentionally text-only).
- Hero failures (3): parrot-recorder (only a 360×360 preview-parrot.webp on the dev site; all other imgs are tiny SVG UI parts; under the 400px-long-edge minimum), us-national-park-finder (SPA — only the 1024×1024 site icon `national-parks-icon.png` exists, which is a logo not a screenshot — rejected per skill rules), sidewalk-joy-map (curl returned zero `<img>` tags; the map is fully client-rendered).
- Wallpaper srcset fallback used: the-fife-arms — homepage had no og:image but the WordPress srcset attribute on the hero exposed a 2560×1440 `Exterior02-scaled.jpg`. Pattern worth noting: WordPress sites with no og:image often still publish full-size images via srcset on the homepage carousel.
- App-screenshot fallback used: chess-peace — `og:image` was the relative `images/app-icon.png` (1024×1024 icon); replaced with `images/screenshot-gameplay.png` (1320×2868 phone screenshot) for a usable hero.
- YouTube thumbnail fallback used: boards-of-canada-b-sides-mix and every-frame-a-painting-isle-of-dogs — both fetched via `https://img.youtube.com/vi/<videoid>/maxresdefault.jpg` since neither Kottke link nor the videos themselves expose a directly-fetchable og:image to curl.
- Reddit i.redd.it direct: smartmover-shortcut — used the post's image URL since the redditor's only canonical link is RoutineHub (no preview there).
### New source nominees
2 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- Routinehub.co — surfaced as the canonical hosting URL for the SmartMover shortcut. Community-shared iOS Shortcuts directory; could complement r/shortcuts as a less-noisy feed.
- Moss & Fog — surfaced via Messy Nessy's vol. 770 crediting them ("Found via Moss & Fog") for the Anton Elfilter mixed-media collages post. Visual-culture publication leaning art / design / curiosity.
### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **Atlas Obscura**: 4th run trend is downward — last run had a 503KB content body, this run returns a 5471-byte Cloudflare challenge stub. Time to flip to `fetch: skip` with skipReason "Cloudflare JS challenge intermittently lifts; not reliable enough for daily fetch."
- **Kevin Kelly thetechnium**: the regex `<h2 class="entry-title">` returned zero matches this run despite the URL serving content. Either the markup changed or the site went heavier on JS rendering. Inspect the live HTML and update the parser, or accept a `fetch: skip` until the structure is reverified.
- **Reader's Digest Jokes**: WebFetch 403 every run for 3+ runs. Time to mark `fetch: skip` with skipReason "WebFetch 403, persistent."
- **TidBITS**: same — WebFetch 403 every run. `fetch: skip` overdue.
- **9to5Mac**: `/guides/macos-tips/` 404'd this run; last run `/guides/` returned only category nav. Both subpaths fail. Either find a category path that's stable (e.g. `/category/apple-tips/`) or mark `fetch: skip`.
- **Uncommon Goods**: `/new` worked this run (15 products extracted); last run reported `/new-arrivals` and `/fun/new-arrivals` both 404. Update `fetchUrl` to `https://www.uncommongoods.com/new` and the source becomes reliably productive again.
- **Kikkerland**: `/collections/new-arrivals` 404'd this run; `/collections/all` worked (7 products extracted) but is noisier. Worth one experiment with `/collections/new` (singular) before settling on `/all`.
- **A.Word.A.Day**: the `/words/today.html` URL works but the WebFetch summarizer truncated the "Thought for Today" quote at "the brute mass-impulse, the pride and..." — the quote is incomplete in the response. Either prompt the fetcher to return the entire quotation block verbatim, or accept that AWAD will sometimes yield only partial pulls.
- **Cool Material**: scanned with `/gear/` this run, returned a single `/feature/black-book-april-2026/` aggregate post — promising as a per-month dive but the user cancelled the fetch this run. Worth retrying next run with the Black Book post URL as the primary entry point.
- **Sidewalk Joy Map** (one-off, not a source): the page renders zero `<img>` tags via curl — the map UI is fully client-rendered. If a SidewalkJoy find is ever graduated to a review, the hero will need either a Wikipedia-style fallback (none exists) or a manual screenshot.

## 2026-05-04 — review: sindre-sorhus-older-mac-apps
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-04, source: r/macapps. New category `indie` introduced for the editorial-about-developer-practice angle (no existing category fit). No hero asset — `sindresorhus.com/apps/older-versions` is intentionally text-only (no `og:image`, no `<img>` tags, only an inline SVG favicon); review matches the find in being hero-less.

## 2026-05-04 — capture run

Sources scanned: 60 total — 16 hits, ~24 empty/unproductive, 11 blocked/broken, 9 skipped (per sources.json `fetch: skip`).

Unproductive but live: MacStories (top items already captured 2026-05-03), One Thing Well (top posts already captured), Six Colors (storage-tip post + travel-tech post — only known products), Cool Tools (Embassy of the Free Mind already captured + Frequent Fliers / Pants / Injection-Enormous Smallness all roundup-format, no single virtue), Recomendo (issue #513 = Stillgram/Aootek/Magnified Sand — all three already captured 2026-05-03), Cool Material (only feature-essays and partner posts), Kevin Kelly thetechnium (essays + weekly link roundups, no new specific products), Carryology (4 posts — only the Wingback SOLIDSTATE buckle is product-specific, but it's a Kickstarter shipping October 2026 → fails "currently buyable"), A Continuous Lean (2024-2025 posts only), Put This On (internal shop posts and evergreen guides), Standard & Strange Journal (Field Guides — historical garment essays), Outlier (Injex/Cannabiscotton/Ramielust drops with no readable virtues), Snow Peak (SPA — only nav anchors), Messy Nessy Chic (Vol. 772 just published; per-item links inside aren't extractable from the index summary), Things Magazine (link roundups), OSXDaily (procedural tips this week — Secure Erase, Compromised Passwords, WindowServer fix — none rise above generic how-to), The Eclectic Light Company (already-captured Finder Tags post + niche VM internals), Dr. Drang — leancrew.com (4 posts — Apple-accessory commentary and email-blocking critiques), Werd.com (10 best-of listicles), StyleForum (homepage shows only affiliate vendor threads), Atlas Obscura (curl returned articles index but no qualifying virtues extractable), r/BuyItForLife (anecdote photos and "is this legit?" posts), r/shortcuts (top item is dynamic-wallpaper recreation — link is image-only with no canonical iCloud Shortcut URL in the body), Wikiquote (recent edits don't surface easily-quotable picks), Uses This (interview titles only — tools live behind individual interview pages this run), Hacker News — Show HN (~half are dev-libs / dashboards; only Snewpapers crossed the bar), Product Hunt (not productive in prior runs, skipped this sweep).
Blocked or broken this run: TidBITS (WebFetch 403 — persistent across runs), Uncommon Goods (`/new-arrivals` and `/fun/new-arrivals` both 404 — needs URL audit), Kikkerland `/collections/new-products` 404 (used `/collections/all` as workaround), Snow Peak `/collections/new-arrivals` (Shopify SPA — same root cause as MoMA), MoMA Design Store (still SPA — only `moma-e-gift-card` extractable, third run with this signature), Unusual Hotels of the World (4KB SPA shell again — third confirmation, should be `fetch: skip`), 9to5Mac `/guides/` (renders only category nav on the homepage — needs a per-category fetchUrl override), A.Word.A.Day (homepage doesn't show the daily entry inline — needs a `fetchUrl` override pointing at `/words/today.html`), icanhazdadjoke API (`/api/random?count=15` 404 — endpoint syntax may have changed), snewpapers.com (returns HTTP 406 "Your browser is not supported" to iPhone Safari UA — still wrote the find from the Show HN summary, hero fetch failed), Reader's Digest Jokes (skipped this run — known persistent 403).

### Hero coverage
- Heroes saved: 15 of 16 attempted (sindre-sorhus + 5 quotes + 3 jokes intentionally text-only).
- Single hero failure: snewpapers-newspaper-archive — site returns HTTP 406 "browser not supported" to iPhone Safari UA, no extractable images on the rendered shell, topic doesn't lend itself to a Wikipedia fallback. Accepted as no-hero.
- Wikipedia fallback used: garden-of-eden-swimming-hole → `Henry_Cowell_Redwoods_State_Park` og:image (the Outbound article's own og:image was a Mapbox map tile, deleted).
- Brand-site screenshot fallback used: terminal-widget → `cdn.terminalwidget.app/.../widgets-700.21.jpg` (no og:image on the homepage; the source page links only to favicons).
- Roadtrippers featured-image fallback used: seward-time-capsule → article-page `<img>` (no og:image meta despite the article having a hero — pattern worth noting for next pass).
- Press-article fallback used: and-vinyly-ashes-records → Open Culture article og:image (the Wix-hosted andvinyly.com homepage has only a 192px logo).
### New source nominees
2 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- Tokyo Paladin (substack) — surfaced via Daring Fireball Linked List crediting their Noir cookies post.
- PetaPixel — surfaced via Kottke linking to their NASA Artemis II coverage.
No targeted WebSearch this run; candidate-sources.md is already healthy with un-vetted nominees from prior sweeps.
### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **Unusual Hotels of the World**: third run in a row returns the 4KB `<title>Uhotw</title>` SPA shell. Time to switch to `fetch: skip` with `skipReason: "Single-page-app shell — homepage HTML contains no content; would need a headless browser."`
- **MoMA Design Store**: third run with the same signature (1.2MB curl body, only the `moma-e-gift-card` slug extractable from the nav). The `/collections/new.json` Shopify default returned nothing in past attempts. Mark `fetch: skip` until a JSON endpoint is identified, or accept this source is permanently nav-only.
- **Uncommon Goods**: `/new-arrivals` 404'd this run (worked in 2026-05-03 round 1). `/fun/new-arrivals` also 404'd. The path may be `/products/new` or `/c/new`. Audit the live storefront to find the canonical new-arrivals URL.
- **Kikkerland**: `/collections/new-products` 404'd. Used `/collections/all` as a workaround but it's noisy. Audit whether the canonical "new" path is `/collections/new-arrivals` or `/collections/new`.
- **9to5Mac Guides**: the `/guides/` page renders only category navigation, not articles. Either point `fetchUrl` at a specific category like `/guides/macos-tips/` or accept this source needs per-topic deep links.
- **A.Word.A.Day**: homepage doesn't display the daily entry inline. The actual word lives at `/words/today.html`. Add `fetchUrl: "https://wordsmith.org/words/today.html"`.
- **icanhazdadjoke API**: `/api/random?count=15` returned 404. Their canonical multi-joke endpoint may have moved; the single-joke endpoint `/` with `Accept: application/json` should still work as a fallback.
- **Atlas Obscura**: the article-index curl works but neither the place-detail nor article-detail pages yield extractable virtues consistently. After three runs of this same pattern, lower the editorial expectation — treat AO as a "title harvester" only and skip writing finds unless the title alone passes the bar (rarely safe).
- **snewpapers.com**: HTTP 406 to standard browser UA on the homepage. Worth experimenting with a UA that includes specific `Accept-Language` and `Accept` headers — they may be filtering on those rather than on the User-Agent string itself.
- **Roadtrippers**: articles do have hero images but no `og:image` meta tag — the hero fetcher needs a fallback to the first content `<img>` on the page when og:image is missing.

Blocked or broken this run: Atlas Obscura (initial curl returned content but place detail pages now hit Cloudflare; WebFetch on slugs returned 403; place titles harvested from index but bodies inaccessible — bar requires specific virtue, so skipped writing finds), This Is Why I'm Broke (curl returns Mustache `{{entry.title}}` placeholders — content still client-rendered), MoMA Design Store (1.2MB body, but only 1 product slug `/products/moma-e-gift-card` extractable — full grid is JS-rendered, same as previous run), Web Curios (`/all-curios/` returned only 36KB nav shell), Reader's Digest Jokes (WebFetch 403), TidBITS (WebFetch 403), Uncommon Goods (WebFetch on `/new` returned 5 items — usable, but the URL pattern `/product/<slug>` may not be canonical), Unusual Hotels of the World (still a 4KB SPA shell — `/blogs/journal` 404 last sweep too; mark `fetch: skip` next pruning).
Skipped (per sources.json): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.

### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **Atlas Obscura** regression: the previous sweep noted curl returned content; this sweep, the index curl still returns content (so we extracted place slugs/titles), but individual `/places/<slug>` pages now hit Cloudflare's "Attention Required!" challenge for both curl-with-Safari-UA and WebFetch. That means we can see *what's* recently added but not extract the lead paragraph that supplies the specific virtue. Either fetch via `places/recent.rss` if it exists, or fall back to writing finds only when the slug itself is unambiguous (rarely safe).
- **Uncommon Goods** product URL pattern: WebFetch returned items with `/product/<slug>` paths — verify this is canonical before next run, since the storefront may also use `/products/<slug>` (plural). Saved finds use the singular form Uncommon Goods returned.
- **MoMA Design Store**: same SPA issue as the previous sweep — 1.2MB curl body, only 1 product slug extractable. Worth one experiment with `/collections/new.json` (Shopify default) before giving up.
- **This Is Why I'm Broke**: still Mustache placeholders in the curl response — content is API-driven. Inspect their network traffic in a browser to identify the actual JSON endpoint, or mark `fetch: skip`.
- **Unusual Hotels of the World**: still a 4KB SPA shell (`<title>Uhotw</title>` is the entire content). Switching to `fetch: skip` is overdue.
- **TidBITS, Reader's Digest Jokes, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter, The Sweet Setup, Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Spotted by Locals**: WebFetch 403s, persistent across runs. The pattern is consistent enough that adding them as `fetch: skip` would clean up the run output. Real fix is a headless-browser fetcher, separate workstream.
- **Web Curios `/all-curios/`**: this sweep returned 36KB nav-shell only. The newsletter content lives on Substack archives — point `fetchUrl` at the most recent issue's Substack URL or the RSS feed instead.

## 2026-05-03 — capture run (Amazon-focused sweep)
Sources scanned: 47 total — 8 hits, ~21 empty, 9 blocked/broken (WebFetch 403/500/empty body, redirect-only), 9 skipped (per sources.json `fetch: skip`).

Guzman's iTunes recreations) rather than to publications worth tracking. Existing candidate-sources.md still has the gift-focused Amazon round queued for vetting.
### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **MoMA Design Store**: curl returns 1.2MB of HTML but the product grid is rendered via JS — only nav anchors are extractable. Would need a headless browser, or the storefront's collection JSON endpoint if Shopify exposes one. Same root cause as Snow Peak's "nav only" result.
- **Atlas Obscura**: curl returns 503KB body and HTTP 200, but the anchor parser only extracted the global nav (Places/Foods/Stories) — likely because the Recently Added cards are rendered client-side too. Try fetching `/places/recent` via curl with the Safari UA, or the regional sitemap.
- **This Is Why I'm Broke**: WebFetch on `/new` 404'd and the homepage HTML uses `{{entry.title}}` Mustache placeholders — the product feed is loaded client-side. Skip-mark for now or find their JSON endpoint.
- **Unusual Hotels of the World**: curl returned 4KB and `<title>Uhotw</title>` — the site appears to be a thin SPA shell. Probably needs `fetch: skip` or a different fetchUrl.
- **Uncommon Goods**: WebFetch returned empty for both `/new-arrivals` URLs tried — needs a fetchUrl override.
- **Snow Peak**: nav-only response on `/collections/new-arrivals` — likely Shopify SPA. Look for a JSON product feed URL.
- **r/BuyItForLife**: top-of-week is heavy on personal-anecdote photo posts ("My N64 still works after 30 years") rather than product picks. The signal-to-noise ratio is lower than the macapps subreddit; may want to filter on text posts only or pin a sub-filter URL.

## 2026-05-03 — theme: single-virtue tools
Sources scanned: 46 total — 23 hits, 5 empty, 17 blocked (Cloudflare 403 / 404 / timeout / dead domain), 1 skipped (paywalled).
Productive sources: r/macapps, Hacker News — Show HN, Tools and Toys, Kikkerland.
Unproductive but live: MacStories (gaming-heavy week), Six Colors, Daring Fireball, One Thing Well, Outlier, Snow Peak, Put This On, A Continuous Lean, Roadtrippers, AFAR, Wallpaper*, Boutique Homes, Things Magazine, Open Culture, Messy Nessy Chic, The Outbound, Uncommon Goods, Werd.com, Cool Tools, Carryology, Kottke.org, Recomendo (Substack archive empty).
Blocked or broken: The Sweet Setup (403), Cool Material (500), Gear Patrol (403), The Awesomer (403), MoMA Design Store (no scraped content), Permanent Style (403), Heddels (403), Standard & Strange (404 — URL needs fixing), Mr Porter Journal (timeout), StyleForum (403), Atlas Obscura (403), Spotted by Locals (403), Unusual Hotels of the World (uhotw.com is now a gambling site — domain lost), This Is Why I'm Broke (404), Indie App Sunday (Mastodon hashtag URL 404), Web Curios (only newsletter index), Kevin Kelly kk.org (homepage doesn't list posts).

### Source maintenance for next pruning pass
- **uhotw.com**: domain expired and is now a gambling site. Update to `unusualhotelsoftheworld.com` or remove.
- **Standard & Strange Journal**: `/blogs/journal` returned 404 — find current journal URL.
- **Indie App Sunday**: Mastodon hashtag URL needs the right format (`https://mastodon.social/tags/IndieAppSunday` 404'd; try `.../tags/indieappsunday`).
- **17 sources block WebFetch with 403** — likely Cloudflare. Many of these would work via `curl` with a browser User-Agent. Consider adding `fetch: curl` mode for a `--with-headers=browser` strategy, or accept that ~⅓ of sources need a different fetch path.

## 2026-05-03 — review: espro-p7-french-press
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-03, source: Tools and Toys.
## 2026-05-04 — media backfill
One-shot bulk backfill of supporting media for every existing find. Saved one image per find at `src/assets/finds/<slug>/hero.<ext>`.
Counts:
- Total finds processed: 104
- Skipped (text-only quotes/dad-jokes): 12
- Downloaded: 85
- Rejected (logo-only / icon-too-small): 2
- Fetch-failed: 5
Fetch-failed slugs (one-line reason):
- apple-frames-4 — iCloud shortcut URL has no usable og:image; MacStories OG resolves to generic site logo.
- smol-pub — minimalist text-only homepage, no images at all.
- start-with-nothing — source URL (herman.bearblog.dev/nothing-is-the-secret-to-structuring-your-work) returns 404; post may have moved or been retitled.
- sunmory-led-floor-lamp — Amazon ASIN `B0BTFG5YJK` returns 404 even via mobile UA; product likely delisted.
- unruly-play-archive — og:image points at `playindex.imagination.ooo` which fails DNS (NXDOMAIN); broken external CDN.
Rejected slugs (one-line reason):
- frogfind — site only exposes a 96x96 brand gif logo; not a hero image.
- paletro — only the 128x128 product icon was available; no screenshot or hero.
Notable patterns / source tuning notes:
- **Amazon product pages require iPhone Safari UA** — desktop UA (and even desktop Mac Safari UA) get redirected to a CAPTCHA stub page. Mobile UA returns the full product HTML with `m.media-amazon.com/images/I/<id>.jpg` references. Default to picking the 7-prefix (largest) variant; 3-prefix entries are 320px thumbnails and fail the 400px minimum.
- **Reddit JSON `.json` endpoint is reliable for recovering external product URLs.** Best strategy: walk `selftext` for non-reddit, non-linkedin links; prefer `.app/.io/.so/.dev/.studio/` plus `apps.apple.com/github.com`; fall back to the post's `preview.images[0].source.url` only if no external link is present.
- **GitHub `opengraph.githubassets.com` rate-limits the standard Mac Safari UA** but serves freely with no UA or with a unique cache-busting path segment. Worth considering a UA-less fallback retry on 429.
- **Many Mac/iOS app sites have only a 256x256 or smaller icon** as their largest visual asset (Wooshy, Scrolla, Paletro). For these, the GitHub repo's auto-generated `opengraph.githubassets.com/<sha>/owner/repo` provides a serviceable 1200x600 fallback.
- **Some og:image meta tags use compact markup with no whitespace between attributes** (`property="og:image"content="..."`). Regex extractors must use `[^>]*` (zero-or-more) rather than `[^>]+` (one-or-more) between attributes.
- **Wikimedia / Wikipedia articles are a great fallback for proper-noun finds** (places, brand-name products) when the canonical site 404s — used for blue-whale-of-catoosa, lamy-studio-rollerball, annas-archive, embassy-of-the-free-mind.
- **App Store og:image URLs use a deceptive path** (`/Placeholder.mill/1200x630wa.jpg`) but actually return real app screenshots. Don't reject by URL pattern — check the binary.
## 2026-05-04 — media backfill, retry pass
Re-attempt of the 7 finds that didn't get a hero in yesterday's bulk pass. Strategy per slug listed below.
- apple-frames-4 → downloaded src/assets/finds/apple-frames-4/hero.png (2048x1079, MacStories long-form article og:image at `cdn.macstories.net/sunday-12-apr-2026-...png`; the AppStories+ URL the previous pass tried was a different episode page with no hero). 395 KB.
- smol-pub → skipped: text-only by design (gemtext markup, "no JavaScript, ads, or tracking technology" — service intentionally has no images; homepage HTML contains zero `<img>` tags; `/about` 404s; `/manual` has none either).
- start-with-nothing → skipped: source bearblog post permanently 404s, Wayback has no snapshot, no ricomendo.com archive entry mentions it. Bear Blog posts have no og:image by default. No retrievable hero.
- sunmory-led-floor-lamp → downloaded src/assets/finds/sunmory-led-floor-lamp/hero.jpg (800x1084 JPEG served as `.webp` — renamed). Source: sunmory.com product page (`/products/led-torchiere-floor-lamp-with-remote`). The original Amazon ASIN B0BTFG5YJK still serves CAPTCHA stub even with iPhone Safari UA — fallback to brand site worked. 19 KB.
- unruly-play-archive → downloaded src/assets/finds/unruly-play-archive/hero.jpg (2000x1279). Source: thisiscolossal.com article hero (`/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/unruly.jpg`). The site's own og:image points at `playindex.imagination.ooo` which still NXDOMAINs; a press writeup with a real photograph of the archive UI made a better hero anyway. 335 KB.
- frogfind → skipped: confirmed by design only a 174x80 frog logo gif. The site is a 1KB HTML page (literally one form, one image, two `<small>` lines) — no screenshot to capture. Accepting as text-only.
- paletro → downloaded src/assets/finds/paletro/hero.jpg (1200x750, JPEG via `.png` URL — renamed). Source: Setapp's app page (`store.setapp.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=1200,quality=75,format=auto/app/465/screenshots/...`). The dev's own appmakes.io page only has the 128x128 icon; Setapp has full-size product screenshots through their CF image proxy. 42 KB.
Counts:
- Retried: 7
- Downloaded this pass: 4 (apple-frames-4, sunmory-led-floor-lamp, unruly-play-archive, paletro)
- Accepted as text-only / unrecoverable: 3 (smol-pub, start-with-nothing, frogfind)
- Disk added: 780 KB total
Notable patterns / SKILL.md update candidates:
- **Setapp screenshots CDN is a strong fallback for Mac apps that aren't on the App Store** (`store.setapp.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=1200,quality=75,format=auto/app/<id>/screenshots/<file>`). When a dev's own site only ships a 128x128 or 256x256 icon, Setapp's app page (`setapp.com/apps/<slug>`) often has 5+ proper screenshots accessible via their CF Images proxy. Worth slotting in *between* the dev-site icon check and the GitHub-OG fallback.
- **Press / blog write-ups are a viable hero source when a brand's own og:image is broken** — Colossal, MacStories, The Verge, etc. all serve large, well-cropped article heroes via standard og:image. For finds where the canonical site is dead-link-on-image, search for a recent press writeup of *the project itself* (not just the topic) and use its og:image. Worked for unruly-play-archive (Colossal) where the site's own CDN (`playindex.imagination.ooo`) still NXDOMAINs.
- **Some Shopify product sites serve JPEG bytes via `.webp` URLs** (sunmory.com — `Content-Type: image/jpeg`, magic bytes `FF D8 FF E0`, but URL extension is `.webp`). The fetcher should branch on `file` magic, not URL extension, when picking the saved extension.
- **Setapp's `.png` URLs likewise serve JPEG**. Same recommendation: trust `file` over the URL.
- **Amazon CAPTCHA is now triggered even by iPhone Safari UA** for some delisted ASINs (B0BTFG5YJK responded with the same `opfcaptcha.amazon.com` stub on mobile UA as on desktop). The mobile-UA workaround still works for *live* products but not for delisted ones — for delisted, fall straight through to brand-site / Wayback / press.
- **Bear Blog and Smol Pub are text-only platforms that systematically lack og:image**. Worth maintaining a small allowlist of "skip image search, mark text-only" hosts (`*.bearblog.dev`, `smol.pub`, `m15o.smol.pub`, etc.) so the fetcher doesn't waste a Wayback round trip.
- **Wayback Machine 404s are quick to detect**: the response is a full 152KB `Wayback Machine` HTML shell containing the literal string `404`. A grep for `<title>Wayback Machine</title>` plus `404` in body short-circuits the fetch.

Hero: replaced the find's app-icon hero with the Seek-feature screenshot from superkey.app (1800×950, 192 KB), which actually shows the OCR-driven click in action.

## 2026-05-04 — review: timelined
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-03, source: Brett Terpstra.
Hero: pulled the iPhone timeline screenshot from timelined.app.
New category introduced: `journal` (no existing review category fit a personal-history app).
## 2026-05-04 — review: snewpapers-newspaper-archive
Graduated from find captured on 2026-05-04, source: Hacker News — Show HN.
No hero asset — text-only review for now; user may drop a homepage screenshot in later.
New category introduced: `history` (no existing review category fit a digitised-newspaper archive).
Review body corrects the find's "no account required" claim — the live site requires a free account, and coverage is American-focused.

Heroes pulled (12 of 12) — second-pass recovery covered all three initial misses:
First pass (8/11):
- vivid (twitter:image png, 1200×600)
- daisydisk (og:image jpg, 1200×630)
- ia-writer (og:image webp)
- launchos (og:image jpg, 2268×1473)
- macfolio (og:image, served jpg under .png URL — saved as .jpg)
- wallspace (og:image, served png under .jpg URL — saved as .png)
- appcleaner (no og:image; pulled the dev-site product shot at /img/appcleaner.png — 465×365, slightly under the 400px threshold but it's a clean product image)
- monitorcontrol (no usable og:image — GitHub auto-card has overlay text — pulled `.github/screenshot.png` from the repo)
Recovery pass (3 + blip):
- mos (downloaded `og.svg`, fixed an unescaped `&` on line 78 of the SVG, ran through `rsvg-convert -w 1200 -h 630` → 1200×630 png; the asset is the dev's brand+tagline OG card, so it's a "card" hero rather than a screenshot — comparable to DaisyDisk's)
- clocker (GitHub repo's `Archive/Old Screenshots/Clocker-1.png` via `raw.githubusercontent.com` — 1282×800 actual product screenshot of the menu-bar time-zone view)
- cleanmykeyboard (App Store does serve screenshots in plain HTML after all — they're scattered as `https://is1-ssl.mzstatic.com/image/thumb/PurpleSource…/<id>.jpg/1286x804bb.jpg` URLs; previous run filtered them out because the regex stopped at the first non-`.jpg/.png/.webp` extension and missed the `/1286x804bb.jpg` size suffix appended after the image-id `.jpg`. Fixed the regex this run; got a clean 1286×804 product screenshot.)
- blip (og:image at `https://blip.net/og_image.jpg`, 1200×630)
Patterns / SKILL.md update candidates:
- **GitHub auto-OG cards (`opengraph.githubassets.com/...`) carry the repo's tagline as overlay text** — skip per the "no overlay text" rule. Prefer a real screenshot from `.github/` or `assets/` (or `Archive/`!) via `raw.githubusercontent.com` instead.
- **Some sites' og:image URL lies about extension.** macfolio.com/og-image.png served JPEG bytes; wallspace served PNG bytes from a `.jpg` URL. Same lesson as the prior Setapp/Sunmory note: trust `file` magic over the URL extension when naming the saved hero. Worth fixing in the hero-fetch path itself.
- **App Store screenshots ARE accessible via plain HTML, but the URLs have a doubled extension.** The pattern is `https://is1-ssl.mzstatic.com/image/thumb/PurpleSource…/<id>.jpg/<W>x<H>bb.jpg` — the `.jpg` after `<id>` is part of the path, then the resize suffix `<W>x<H>bb.<ext>` appends. Naive regexes that stop at the first `.jpg|.png|.webp` truncate before the resize suffix and grab a 200×200 thumb instead of the 1286×804 hero. Fix: greedy match through to the LAST extension-like suffix on the URL. (CleanMyKeyboard worked this run after applying that fix.)
- **`og.svg` is now common** on Next.js / Vercel-hosted dev sites (Mos, others). `find-hero.ts` only globs `{png, jpg, jpeg, gif, webp}`. The pragmatic answer is to convert at fetch time with `rsvg-convert -w 1200 -h 630 in.svg -o out.png` — works fine, accepts a wide set of SVG features, and produces a hero compatible with the existing glob. Watch for unescaped `&` characters in the SVG body (Mos had one on line 78) — `rsvg-convert` is a strict XML parser and will reject the file; a simple `sed 's/&/\&/g'` over the text-content lines is enough.
- **Repos sometimes hide screenshots under `Archive/Old Screenshots/`** (Clocker) — old marketing material the maintainer didn't bother re-shooting after the redesign. Still a perfectly usable product shot. Worth checking `Archive/`, `docs/`, `marketing/`, and any `.github/` dir before giving up on a GitHub-hosted find.
## 2026-05-05 — review: blip
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-05, source: Reader suggestion.
Hero: rejected the find's `blip.net/og_image.jpg` brand-card splash in favour of MacMenuBar's 500×491 product screenshot showing the actual menu-bar dropdown (paired-devices list, search, "Add a Device"). Smaller than usual but content-only and shows what the app does, vs. a marketing collage with overlay text.
Category: `indie` (existing — fits cleanly alongside other single-purpose indie apps without justifying a new `file-transfer` or `networking` bucket yet).
Pattern note: **secondary blog/curation sites are a good hero source for apps whose own site is a heavily-styled marketing splash.** MacMenuBar embedded a clean menu-bar product crop that the dev site itself didn't expose anywhere fetchable. Worth adding macmenubar.com to the "press writeup fallback" list alongside Colossal/MacStories.

## 2026-05-09 — capture run
Three-day gap since the 2026-05-06 evening sweep. Sources scanned: 59 in `sources.json` — 22 productive (66 hits), ~26 unproductive but live, 3 blocked/broken (Atlas Obscura still cloudflare-stub, MoMA store needed JS-data parse not WebFetch, StyleForum 403 to WebFetch but works via curl), 9 skipped per `fetch: skip`. Net 66 new finds after dedup against the 223-find baseline (289 total now).

Productive sources: r/macapps (7 — Loop, Paperman, Liqoria, FileFluss, SuperIsland, Strflow, Contact Sheet), r/shortcuts (1 — Daniel Fox YouTube HLS), r/dadjokes (6), icanhazdadjoke (6), Daring Fireball (1 — Prolost Watches), Brett Terpstra (1 — GitHub-contribution image API, his own May 8 post), The Eclectic Light Company (2 — APFS snapshot rollback, Spotlight metadata check), OSXDaily (1 — Wallpaper Reactor Lite), Wallpaper* Travel (5 — Hotel Julien, Six Senses London, JW Marriott Tokyo, Belmond Celia, Mitsu London), Boutique Homes (3 — 34 Rue Louise-Emilie, CasaCau, Parisian Designer Pied à Terre), AFAR (2 — Hotel Monroe Louisiana, suitcase-on-bed bacteria), The Outbound Collective (2 — The Narrows, Havasu Falls), MoMA Design Store (7 — Tom Dixon Jack, Aer City Pack Pro 2, magnetic chess set, glass fruit vase, Orb utensil, Duchamp 2027 calendar, I Heart NY Hoptimist), Snow Peak (5 — Spring Stacking Mug Set, Field Barista Kettle, Urban Umbrella, Micro Hozuki, Shimo Tumbler 360), Kottke.org (3 — Nibmeisters, Pocket Forests / Miyawaki, Wowsabout!), Cool Tools (1 — Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind), Open Culture (2 — Egyptian honey shelf life, Buckminster Fuller population animation), Web Curios (8 — Vaskange, RedditTok/reddvu, Blind Data, Eurovision lyrics scrollytelling, NTK Archive, Sample Text Project, Land Lines, Last Night's Sunset), A.Word.A.Day (1 — Pynchon "wrong questions"), The Marginalian (2 — Gary Snyder cage, Marianne Moore imaginary gardens), Quote Investigator (1 — Boulay "worse than a crime").
Unproductive but live: MacStories (Astropad Workbench is news-style, Apple Frames 4 + Pedometer 8 already captured, Club issues paywalled), Tools and Toys (CoBak/Felo/Ooni/Marshall/Bridge City/umoven/Anker — all already captured), One Thing Well (top 10 unchanged from 2026-05-06 evening, all already captured), Six Colors (storage-tip essay + Hovercraft + tech travel essay all already captured one way or another; new MacBook Neo Culpan analysis is industry news), Cool Material (homepage = same Nike/Bulova/G-Shock partner content as 2026-05-06), Werd (only listicle roundups visible), Carryology (Bellroy x Carryology Sling considered but it's a launched-soon collab teaser without a working product page), Standard & Strange Journal (the 7 Field Guides are educational essays not specific products), Outlier (Sunwarp/Injex/Ramielust/Littlebigs all already captured or in already-captured collections), A Continuous Lean (still December 2025 — no new posts since prior runs), Put This On (only the J. Press March drawing post + "Inside Track" eBay roundups — eBay roundups are members-only marketplace alerts, not findable items), Recomendo issue #513 (all 6 picks already captured 2026-05-06), Quote Investigator (rest of recent set — Reeve, Dyer, Stendhal, Lobsters, Feet/Knees, Research/Einstein — all already captured or rejected), The Marginalian Acosta/Cosmotheoros essay (not a captureable line; Loneliness essay had a usable line on the human condition but the source attribution would just be Popova's prose, not a sourced quote), Things Magazine (most recent post April 5 — same content for 4+ runs, source is functionally dormant; nominate for `fetch: skip` if no May post by next run), Snow Peak (deep-dive into New Arrivals JSON parse this run — got 28 products listed, picked the 5 most distinctive: spring-stacking, field-barista, urban-umbrella, micro-hozuki, shimo-tumbler), Roadtrippers Magazine (Route 66 nostalgia posts + RVC sponsored content + parkitecture roundup — none are individually-captureable), Wikiquote (Ted Turner May 7 quote of the day too generic), Dr. Drang (May 8 Key followup is engineering critique, not a tool; AirPort Express commentary is retro-essay; the iOS Mail blocking series is procedural rather than discrete tool-tip), Uses This (5 most recent interviews — Le Cunff, Lim, Newbold, Peck, Ruppert — index page only; full pages aren't being fetched and tools-mentioned aren't extractable from index alone, same pattern as past runs).
Blocked or broken: Atlas Obscura (Cloudflare 5471-byte stub — fourth consecutive run; `fetch: skip` is now extremely overdue. The articles `jens-jensen-winding-road-door-county-wisconsin` and the Cadillac Ranch place page both 403/stub. Articles I tried via direct curl all returned the same stub. Recommend flipping to `fetch: skip` next prune), MoMA Design Store (the WebFetch view shows only the navigation framework — actual product cards are rendered in JS-embedded JSON. Workaround: parse `name:`/`handle:`/`image:` JSON fragments from the raw HTML — the data is server-rendered into the page as a JS object literal, not loaded via XHR. Captured 7 items via this approach. Worth documenting as the canonical MoMA fetch pattern), TIWIB (Angular-SPA; only template placeholders in the HTML — same regression as 2026-05-06 evening), StyleForum (curl works at 156KB but the homepage is a category-grid not a thread index — the recent-threads list isn't extractable from that landing page; we'd need /forums/whats-new/posts/ to surface fresh content. Future runs should target that path), Web Curios (5/8/26 issue posted today — captured 8 picks. Issue is finally substantive, ending the multi-week dormancy noted in earlier runs).
Skipped (per sources.json `fetch: skip`): The Sweet Setup, Indie App Sunday (Mastodon), Gear Patrol, The Awesomer, Permanent Style, Heddels, Mr Porter Journal, Spotted by Locals, The Browser.
Kikkerland: skipped this run on the same Amazon-storefront-verification basis as 2026-05-06 evening. Surveyed 8 homepage products (Robin 3D Puzzle, Light Up Pencil, Golf Wine Aerator, Woodpecker Garden Shears, Wooden Mini Wrench, Cactus Car Charger, Cat Butt Magnets) but the Amazon `/s/?k=Kikkerland+...` searches still return CAPTCHA stubs even with full-headers + compression. Per the 2026-05-06 evening note, the right unblock is either pre-caching Kikkerland's Amazon brand-store ASIN list, or flipping the Kikkerland `link:` to point at the kikkerland.com product page directly (no Amazon affiliate routing, no `gift` tag rule auto-applied). Logging as deferred.
Reader's Digest Jokes / TidBITS / Kevin Kelly thetechnium: not scanned this run (low signal across last 4+ runs).

### Hero coverage
- Heroes saved: 47 of 54 attempted (12 jokes are text-only by convention; 4 quotes are text-only; pynchon-wrong-questions also text-only). Failures: 7 finds without a usable hero.
- Hero failures by reason:
- **superisland**: dynamicisland.app `/og-image.png` returns HTML (the Vercel-hosted Next.js app's edge function isn't generating a real OG card). README has only a 96×96 logo. Skipped — no usable image.
- **vaskange-nested-worlds**: site has no og:image meta tag and no usable static screenshots; the experience is a JS-rendered illustrated canvas with only the 128×128 favicon as a static asset. Skipped.
- **ntk-archive**: ntk.net is plain HTML 1997-era markup with no images at all on the index. Text-only by site design — skipped.
- **sample-text-store-merch**: og:image points to a 32×32 favicon (`/assets/favicon.png`); no other static image assets. Skipped.
- **youtube-hls-shortcut**: danielfox.ie post has no og:image meta tag. Personal blog using a minimalist template that doesn't generate per-post social cards. Skipped.
- **pynchon-wrong-questions**: text-only quote, no image needed (per convention).
- **joke-* (12 files)**: text-only by convention.
- Notable hero pattern wins this run:
- **MoMA Design Store JSON parse**: the og:image meta tag is set on individual product pages and points to `store.moma.org/cdn/shop/files/<uuid>.jpg?v=<timestamp>`. Adding `&width=1500` to the URL upscales to 1500×1500 cleanly. The product handles + names + image URLs are server-rendered into the collection page as JS object literals (`name:"...",handle:"...",image:"\/\/..."`), so the canonical fetch pattern is curl→regex on those literals rather than parsing rendered HTML.
- **Snow Peak product images**: the og:image protocol-relative `//www.snowpeak.com/cdn/shop/files/<id>.jpg?v=...&width=1200` URLs come down clean at 1200×1500 (their canonical product photo aspect ratio is 4:5 portrait). Worth noting in the skill — these aren't 16:9, they're tall portraits, which look OK in the tile grid but aren't standard hero proportions.
- **Wallpaper* CDN remains rock-solid**: all 5 picks (hotel-julien, six-senses-london, jw-marriott-tokyo-takanawa, belmond-celia-baz-luhrmann, mitsu-london) had og:image at `cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/<hash>.<ext>` returning clean 1540–6000px images.
- **Boutique Homes ImageKit URLs**: their canonical og:image is at `boutique-homes-prod.sfo3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/properties/<id>/...jpg`. Some come pre-sized via ImageKit query params (`?tr=w-3840,ar-1.3-1`); others are raw. All three picks downloaded clean at 1920×1280.
- **The Outbound Collective**: og:image URLs are at `images.theoutbound.com/<date>/<hash>?w=1200&h=630&fit=crop&...&s=<sig>`. The signature `s=` parameter is required — strip it and the URL returns 403. Easy to copy-paste verbatim. Also note the Outbound site itself is read-only on a stale 2017 image cache for older trails (Havasu image is from 2017-12-19).
- **Reddit external-preview URLs work without re-encoding**: paperman, liqoria, loop, strflow, contact-sheet, filefluss all came down clean at 1072–4227px. The signed-URL pattern continues to be reliable.
- **GitHub repo screenshots beat OG cards**: replaced the Reddit-preview Loop hero with `/MrKai77/Loop/raw/develop/assets/graphics/Classic.png` (977×977 clean radial-menu screenshot) — pattern note already established 2026-05-03 stays current. Watch for `develop` branch vs `main`.
- Overrides applied this run:
- Replaced FileFluss's `preview.redd.it` gallery hero with the canonical homepage screenshot at `ranagmbh.de/wp-content/uploads/FileFluss-main-scaled.webp` (2560×1627) — better composition, no Reddit gallery framing.
- Replaced Loop's reddit-preview hero with the project's own README screenshot at `/MrKai77/Loop/raw/develop/assets/graphics/Classic.png` — cleaner radial-menu hero.

### Source maintenance notes for next prune
- **Atlas Obscura → flip to `fetch: skip`**. Four consecutive runs returning the 5471-byte Cloudflare stub on both place and article pages. The fetchUrl pattern is functionally broken; only headless-browser scraping would work, which is out of scope for this skill. Alternative: their RSS feed at `https://www.atlasobscura.com/feeds/articles` may bypass the same-origin Cloudflare challenge — worth one experiment, but if that also stubs, accept the loss and skip.
- **Things Magazine → consider quarterly cadence**. Last post 2026-04-05 ("Links to click through and enjoy"). Now stale across 5+ runs. The cadence in `sources.json` says `weekly` but the actual posting cadence appears to be every 1-2 months. Either flag with `cadence: quarterly` or `fetch: skip` until a post actually lands; current scanning is wasted effort.
- **Tools and Toys → still productive but very tight pool**. The 7 visible posts all got captured within the first two days of the find collection's existence. Source remains live but the pace is genuinely slow (1-2 new posts per week) and hit rate is now bounded by their cadence. Worth monitoring rather than expecting daily yield.
- **A Continuous Lean → still December 2025**. Six months of dormancy. Source is functionally dead; suggest moving to `fetch: skip` with `skipReason: dormant — last post December 2025` until a new SIGNALS issue lands.
- **Put This On → marketplace-only output mostly**. Their "Inside Track" weekly emails are eBay-link members-only digests. Public posts are infrequent (J. Press March 5 was the last substantive one). Consider downgrading from `weekly` to `as-needed` cadence and only checking when a non-Inside-Track post is referenced elsewhere.
- **Kikkerland Amazon-storefront verification**: still blocked by CAPTCHA. The 2026-05-06 evening note's two unblocks (pre-cached ASIN list, brand-store landing page) remain unimplemented. Until one lands, Kikkerland is functionally an unproductive source for finds that need the `gift` Amazon-default tag rule applied.
- **Snow Peak collection JSON parsing**: the 2026-05-06 morning post-run note about migrating MoMA + Snow Peak to JSON-endpoint fetches finally got applied this run for both. Snow Peak in particular has a much richer pool than the homepage suggested — the 28-product New Arrivals collection is a steady source of distinctive titanium kit. Worth formalizing the regex-on-product-handle pattern in the skill.

## 2026-05-09 — review: loop-radial-window-manager
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-09, source: r/macapps.
Hero + carousel: 4-slide carousel matching the homerow/dockdoor pattern. Pulled `Radial Menu.mp4`, `Preview.mp4`, `Cycles.mp4`, and `Stash.mp4` from `MrKai77/Loop` GitHub develop branch (`assets/graphics/`). Sources were 3680×2304@60 retina screen recordings, 4-6 MB each — re-encoded with ffmpeg (`scale=1280:-2`, libx264 CRF 23, yuv420p, faststart, audio stripped). Final sizes: 1.3 MB / 2.9 MB / 1.2 MB / 182 KB. Hero (slide 1, radial-menu.mp4) registered in `src/lib/hero.ts`.
Category: `interface` (existing — same bucket as alcove, alt-tab, dockdoor, monocle).
Pattern note: **GitHub `assets/graphics/` directories are an underused hero source for open-source mac apps**. Listed via `api.github.com/repos/.../contents/assets/graphics`, downloaded with curl. Source quality (retina captures) means re-encoding is mandatory or the page weighs 25+ MB; standard recipe is `scale=1280:-2` + CRF 23 + strip audio.

Blocked or empty: Atlas Obscura (Cloudflare-stub for 6th run — confirmed dead, flagging for `fetch: skip` per source maintenance notes below), This Is Why I'm Broke (JS-rendered SPA — body is template-shell only with `{{header.title}}` placeholders visible), Cool Material (returns 297K but listings are JS-rendered; only category and feature/* URLs visible, not parseable by regex), Unusual Hotels of the World (curl returns 4K shell only — title `<title>Uhotw</title>` is the entire useful payload), TidBITS (403 to WebFetch), StyleForum (curl returns 160K but structItem-title regex matches zero — XenForo template changed since last successful parse), Reader's Digest Jokes (curl timed out), A.Word.A.Day index page (WebFetch returned navigation only — had to fetch /words/today.html directly for the daily quote).

### Hero coverage
Heroes saved: 31 of 42 attempted (the 10 jokes and 6 quote-only finds are text-only by convention and excluded from the denominator). Misses (11 finds): aira-teleprompter (Reddit video post with no static preview asset), terminalwidget-desktop (Brett's OG image was the 96×96 site favicon — too small), typhoon-sinlaku-4k (Kottke's OG was a 1×1 spacer; fixed by falling back to YouTube `maxresdefault` thumbnail), justrite-gas-can (corporate site og:image was just the brand logo — removed), speedqueen-tc5 (no og:image meta), swedish-hasbeens-clogs (no og:image), apocalypse-early-warning-jets (data-art site, no og), desktop-tower-defense-revived (JS app, no og), audio-spaces-global-map (no og), takeaway-letters-puzzle (vercel app, no og), us-regional-map-reddit (brilliantmaps article had no fetchable og), add-to-calendar-shortcut-v4 (icloud.com Shortcut URL — Apple's shortcut-sharing service doesn't expose any preview).
Pattern notes this run:
- **Reddit JSON `external-preview.redd.it` URLs require a valid `s=` signature parameter** — stripping it returns a 425-byte empty response (not a useful image, not a redirect). The signature is per-image and per-fetch; reconstructing it without it is impossible. If a Reddit post has only `external-preview` (typically video posts with no static preview), there's no usable hero — skip. This is distinct from `preview.redd.it` URLs (gallery items) which do work.
- **YouTube thumbnail fallback for Kottke video posts**: Kottke's own OG image is sometimes a 1×1 spacer or a generic site logo when the post embeds a YouTube video. Falling back to `https://i.ytimg.com/vi/<id>/maxresdefault.jpg` (or `hqdefault.jpg` if maxres 404s) gives a usable 1280×720 hero. Worth formalizing in the skill as the canonical Kottke-video-post recipe.
- **OG image presence is roughly inversely correlated with site freshness for hobbyist projects**: most of this run's misses (Apocalypse EWS, Audio Spaces, Takeaway, Desktop Tower Defense revival) are small one-developer projects on Vercel/Netlify/personal-domains where setting up `og:image` is the last polish step nobody got to. Wallpaper, MoMA, Wikipedia, and YouTube reliably ship social cards because they have someone whose job it is. Don't bet on hobbyist sites having OGs and don't try to chase fallbacks for them — accept the miss.
- **icloud.com Shortcuts URLs have no fetchable preview**: Apple's shortcut-sharing service `icloud.com/shortcuts/<uuid>` returns a JS-rendered preview page with no og:image. For Shortcuts captured via r/shortcuts, the canonical pattern would need to be: fetch the Reddit post's preview image (often a screenshot of the Shortcut's flow) rather than trying to find an OG on the iCloud landing page. Not always possible — skip if neither is available.
### New source nominees
4 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- Lex Friedman (lexfriedman.com) — developer of Gnome captured this run; small personal site with project releases
- Kyle McDonald (kylemcdonald.net) — data-artist behind Apocalypse Early Warning System; long catalog of unusual web projects
- Brilliant Maps (brilliantmaps.com) — map-curation site surfaced via Kottke; steady source of unusual cartography
- Hand-drawn Games (handdrawngames.com) — Flash-era game revivals; quarterly check candidate
### Source maintenance notes for next prune
- **Atlas Obscura confirmed dead**: 6 consecutive runs returning the 5471-byte Cloudflare stub. The prior maintenance note suggested trying their RSS feed at `https://www.atlasobscura.com/feeds/articles` as a possible bypass — that wasn't tested this run. **Action: flip `fetch: skip` with `skipReason: Cloudflare-blocked, RSS feed untested but try once before fully retiring.**
- **A Continuous Lean**: still at SIGNALS #151 (December 19, 2025). Six-plus months of dormancy. The May 2 ACL × Rivay collab announcement preceded a complete posting hiatus. **Action: flip `fetch: skip` with `skipReason: dormant since Dec 2025`.**
- **Things Magazine**: still at April 5, 2026. Eight-plus weeks since last post. The cadence in `sources.json` says `weekly` but actual posting is every 1–2 months. **Action: change `cadence: weekly` → `cadence: quarterly` and revisit again in two weeks.**
- **Put This On**: posted twice this run (Plantar Fasciitis style drawings May 13, Cufflink Countdown May 11) — actively writing but the content this cycle is style-tip / shop-promo, neither of which surfaces individual buyable items the way their archives used to. Keep at `weekly` for now; the cadence isn't the issue, the editorial focus shift is.
- **Unusual Hotels of the World**: curl returns only 4K with `<title>Uhotw</title>` and no body — site appears to have lost its content or migrated to a SPA. Not actionable from this skill; **flag for manual review** rather than auto-skip.
- **This Is Why I'm Broke**: HTML is a Vue/React shell with `{{header.title}}` placeholders visible in body. Content is API-fetched at runtime. The same pattern as Permanent Style and others. **Either find their backend API endpoint (preferred) or flip `fetch: skip` with `skipReason: SPA, requires headless render`.**
- **Cool Material**: 297K HTML returned cleanly but my listing parses returned zero results — the post-block CSS selectors I was matching against have changed. Their `/feature/` URLs are visible in raw HTML; the next pass should grep for `<a href="https://coolmaterial.com/feature/[^"]+"` and pull from there. **Action: update the skill's parse pattern for Cool Material.**
- **StyleForum**: similar story — 160K HTML, but `class="title structItem-title"` no longer matches. XenForo template changed. **Action: re-derive selectors against the current homepage, or skip until refresh.**
- **Reader's Digest Jokes**: curl timed out (exit code 28) — server appears to be either slow or actively rate-limiting. Worth one more retry next run before flagging.
- **Snow Peak homepage**: this run the homepage emphasized Alpha Breeze / Land Lock / Land Nest tents and the IGT Camp Kitchen — none of which earn a capture under our brief (too specialty-camping rather than daily-use-titanium-kit). Their /collections/new-arrivals JSON is still the right channel; the homepage on its own is not productive for our purposes. **Note: continue fetching new-arrivals JSON, deprioritize homepage scanning.**

## 2026-05-13 — review: bartender-6-dynamic-peninsula
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-13, source: Six Colors.
Hero + carousel: 4-slide carousel matching the homerow/dockdoor/loop pattern. Pulled `bt6-hero-dark.png`, `widgets.png`, `BartenderBar.png`, and `triggers-dark.png` from `macbartender.com/Bartender6/img/`. All are clean marketing screenshots with no overlay text. Peninsula (slide 1) reused the find folder's existing hero copy. Total page weight ~4.7 MB across the four PNG screenshots — comparable to homerow and loop carousels.
Category: `interface` (existing — same bucket as alcove, ice, dockdoor, monocle, loop).
Connection note: pairs naturally with the existing `ice` review (subtitle: "The free, open-source successor to Bartender") and `alcove` (Mac notch widget app). All three sit in the same conceptual neighborhood; the Bartender 6 review references Alcove directly in the body since the peninsula is genuinely on Alcove's turf.
## 2026-05-13 — review: gnome-gif-menubar
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-13, source: Six Colors.
Hero: single screenshot. Replaced the find's icon-based hero with the actual product screenshot from `lexfriedman.com/gnome/screenshot.png` (726×466, 89 KB) — the icon was a misleading hero for the grid since Gnome's interest is the menu-bar interaction, not the app glyph. Single-image format matches hyperkey/alcove/tot — no carousel since the source page only has the icon + one screenshot.
Category: `interface` (same bucket as alcove, dockdoor, monocle).
Editorial note: Gnome's text-in-GIF Apple-Vision OCR is the underappreciated feature — "type 'don't call me Shirley' and the Airplane! GIF surfaces" — so the body leads with the hotkey workflow but earns its second paragraph from OCR. Lex Friedman's own copy on the product page is delightful (the post-trial Weird-Al-or-Rick-Astley freemium gimmick is a keeper); the review preserves the gimmick without copying his voice verbatim.
## 2026-05-13 — review: zenteek-music-player
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-13, source: r/macapps.
Hero + carousel: 4-slide carousel matching the homerow/dockdoor/loop pattern. Pulled screenshots from `zenteek.app/img/` and `/img/v2/`: library view (the homepage hero), graph-search, visualizer, and DSP. The /player page on zenteek.app exposes ~18 named feature screenshots in `/img/v2/<name>1.png` and `<name>2.png` pairs — a richer-than-typical asset set. Total page weight ~4.3 MB across the four PNGs.
Category: **`music` — new category proposed**. None of the existing categories (interface, indie, writing, terminal, etc.) fit a music player well. `indie` would have matched the blip precedent but Zenteek's defining feature is the audio domain, not the indie-ness. The new `music` category page auto-generates at `/categories/music/`; future captures for music apps land cleanly there.
Editorial note: subtitle preserved from the find. The body deliberately names Audirvana, Apple Music, and Roon as comparisons rather than dancing around them — Zenteek's positioning is sharpest in contrast to those specific apps, and the audience for this review already knows them.

## 2026-05-20 — capture run
Sources scanned: 59 total — 50 active, 9 `fetch: skip`. Productive this run: ~25 sources, 67 new finds after dedup against the 347-find baseline (414 total now). Seven-day gap since the 2026-05-13 sweep.
Productive sources: r/macapps (10 — Editorio, ShotGlass, AndroidFileSync, macUSB, AirSpace, Numsy, Muxy, ScreenAlert, Zipora, RapidPhoto), r/shortcuts (5 — Wi-Fi QR clipboard, Wayback Machine iPhone, SnapSilo Back-Tap OCR, Nodex tap utility, Aviation Weather), Six Colors (1 — Indigo), MacStories (1 — Book Beats), Daring Fireball (3 — Dropover, Klack, Griffin PowerMate Driver), Brett Terpstra (1 — Marked 3), The Eclectic Light Company (0 — current cycle is art-history and macOS-internals essays that don't fit the find brief; flagged for next pass), Wallpaper* Travel (5 — Shakti Prana, Fairmont Hanoi, MA/NA Mayfair, Andaz Lisbon, Amangiri Utah), AFAR (3 — Athens climbing, Robert Mondavi, Eisbach wave), The Outbound Collective (3 — Pittock Mansion, Sunset Cliffs cave, Rocky Butte), r/BuyItForLife (3 — Zojirushi, Olight Arkpro, Mason Pearson), Kottke.org (3 — Marbles Squared, Joe Macken NYC model, Art But Make It Sports + Cowcumbers), Web Curios (6 — Drops, Batcloud, Personal Sites, Trambient, Klattsch + repeat of Cursor Camp), Things Magazine (3 — Plug & Socket Museum, Catalog Iweins, Spirochaete Trail + Joe Macken NYC model), Cool Tools (2 — Manga Kamishibai, Making Comics Lynda Barry), Recomendo (1 — Virtual Fish Doorbell), Wikiquote (1 — Edward de Bono creative skill), The Marginalian (3 — Schaller panda, Kundera ambivalence, bell hooks margins), A.Word.A.Day (2 — Balzac vocations, Smithfield match etymology), Quote Investigator (1 — Borge laughter distance), r/dadjokes (7), icanhazdadjoke (3).
Blocked or empty: Atlas Obscura (homepage returned 5 articles this run — they're dated from 2017-2018, looks like the homepage falls back to evergreen pieces — not Cloudflare-blocked any more but yielding stale content), TidBITS (403 to WebFetch), This Is Why I'm Broke + Cool Material + StyleForum + Unusual Hotels of the World (all the same template-parse issues flagged in 2026-05-13 maintenance notes — no fix applied yet), A Continuous Lean (still December 2025 — confirmed dormant for 7th run), Reader's Digest Jokes (curl times out again), Things Magazine (one new post since 2026-05-13 — "Media, objects and places" May 15 — produced 3 captures; cadence-flag from prior run partially vindicated since it's still monthly-ish rather than weekly).

### Hero coverage
Heroes saved: 25 of ~45 attempted (the 12 jokes and 10 quote/etymology/essay finds are text-only by convention and excluded from the denominator). Misses (~20):
- **Reddit rate-limiting**: 6 r/macapps and r/BuyItForLife posts (shotglass, airspace, numsy, macusb, zojirushi, olight) failed after the first batch of 10 succeeded — reddit JSON endpoint started returning 38-byte empty responses for the same UA. Sequential fetches with 5-second sleeps did not recover. **Pattern note: reddit rate-limits the unauthenticated JSON endpoint hard if you exceed ~10 requests in a 60-second window; the rate-limit lasts at least several minutes. For runs that need >10 preview fetches from reddit, either authenticate via OAuth or spread fetches across multiple minutes.**
- **Sites without og:image**: dropover, drops-synthtoy, marbles-squared, plug-socket-museum, trambient, catalog-iweins, manga-kamishibai (Amazon), making-comics, mason-pearson, klattsch (github.io). For Amazon product pages, the og:image is sometimes present but often the rotating product carousel image — needs a separate fetch pattern (`product-image` element parse). Github.io static-site projects almost never set og:image. Indie hobbyist projects (Drops, Trambient) similarly skip OG cards.
- **Editorio hero saved at 11663 bytes**: 1200×630 OG card, web-optimized — small file size but proper dimensions. Kept.
Pattern notes this run:
- **Reddit hot-cache pattern for high-volume runs**: when a Reddit-heavy capture week produces 10+ posts needing preview images, the rate-limit window means the first 8-10 succeed and the rest fail uniformly. Best mitigation: scrape the preview URLs from the `top` JSON listing once (which gives `thumbnail` + `preview` for all posts in a single response) rather than fetching each post's `.json` individually. The listing's preview-fields are slightly lower-resolution but consistently present. Worth changing the find-writing flow to extract previews from the listing JSON at scan time rather than re-fetching per-post at hero time.
- **Tracking blocked / template-changed sources without removing them**: Atlas Obscura started returning evergreen content this run (homepage falls back to 2017-2018 articles when no fresh content is being surfaced) — distinct from being Cloudflare-blocked. The `fetch: skip` flag from the 2026-05-13 maintenance list is still pending; this run's outcome suggests Atlas Obscura is mostly a content-velocity problem now, not an access problem. Consider keeping it but flagging `cadence: as-needed` rather than fully skipping.
- **Long-tail r/dadjokes pruning**: this run's joke captures (10) are smaller than the 2026-05-13 run (10), but the unbundled-jokes pool now sits at 56+ — past the point where a "ten more groans" bundle is the natural next move. Worth a manual review of which jokes should be marked as low-quality / skip-on-re-surface.
- **A.Word.A.Day yields two captures per check**: the word (etymology) and the Thought For Today (quote) are independent items, both citation-traceable. Worth formalizing in the skill — A.Word.A.Day is always potentially 2 finds, not 1, when the word has interesting provenance.
### New source nominees
7 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- shibuyaaa.com — Tokyo studio publishing small browser music projects
- Barbara Iweins (katalog) — Belgian photographer's house-inventory project (one-off vet)
- Plug and Socket Museum — Dutch single-subject archive (template, not ongoing source)
- MCNY exhibitions — NYC-specific cultural deep-dives feed
- visdeurbel.nl — fish doorbell (one-off, but watch for similar webcam-with-purpose)
- Spirochaete Trail — long-running media-essay blog
- personalsit.es — directory as a source-of-sources
### Source maintenance notes for next prune
- **Reddit rate-limit mitigation needed**: change the find-writing flow to extract preview URLs at scan-time from the `top` listing JSON (single request returns preview fields for all 25 posts) rather than re-fetching each post's individual `.json`. This run lost 6 hero images because the per-post requests hit the rate limit; the listing request already had the data.
- **Atlas Obscura `cadence: as-needed`**: not Cloudflare-blocked anymore but homepage falls back to evergreen 2017-era pieces when fresh content is sparse. Less productive than the listed `cadence: daily` suggests. Flag for less-frequent checking rather than skip.
- **A Continuous Lean confirmed dormant 8th run**: still SIGNALS #151 from Dec 2025. The 2026-05-13 maintenance note's `fetch: skip` recommendation is still pending — apply it.
- **Things Magazine confirmed monthly-ish**: posted once in the 7-day window (May 15). The 2026-05-13 `cadence: quarterly` flag was too aggressive — it's irregular monthly, not quarterly. Adjust to `cadence: monthly`.
- **TidBITS continues 403**: 4 consecutive runs blocked to WebFetch. Try `curl` with Safari UA before next run; if also blocked, flag `fetch: skip`.
- **OSXDaily mostly Apple-press-release territory this cycle**: very little actionable for the find brief — 11 of 12 most recent posts are iOS/macOS update news or deal announcements. Worth a `cadence: as-needed` flag — they still occasionally surface a real find (May 9 dial-up ISP was an example) but the signal-to-noise has degraded.
- **Eclectic Light essay-vs-tutorial split**: half of Howard Oakley's recent output is art-history essays ("On Reflection," "Medium and Message: Pottery") that don't fit our brief. The macOS-internals posts continue to be productive. No action — just a reminder that the source has two modes and one is off-brief.
## 2026-05-22 — review: cursor-camp-neal-fun
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-04, source: Kottke.org.
Hero: reused the find's existing hero.png — Neal Agarwal's canonical 1200×630 share card at `neal.fun/share-cards/cursor-camp.png`. Single-image review (no carousel) — the source page has the share card plus the campground itself, which is JS-rendered canvas, so static screenshots wouldn't add much.
Category: **`play` — new category proposed**. None of the existing categories (interface, indie, writing, etc.) fit a browser web-toy. The 2026-05-14 `six-browser-games` bundle already shows there are 5+ unbundled finds that would graduate cleanly into this category. New category page auto-generates at `/categories/play/`.
Bundle membership: cursor-camp-neal-fun is in `2026-05-14-six-browser-games` and remains so after promotion — the find lives, the review is the canonical long form.
## 2026-05-30 — capture run
Sources scanned: 59 total — 50 active, 9 `fetch: skip`. Productive this run: ~18 sources, 54 new finds after dedup against the 414-find baseline (468 total now). Ten-day gap since the 2026-05-20 sweep.
Productive sources: Six Colors (1 — BBEdit 16), MacStories (3 — RemCTL, Shortcuts Playground Remote, BenQ MA270S), Daring Fireball (3 — Aluminium OS, Fonts of US Federal Courts, plus Dropover/Klack/Griffin Powermate already captured 2026-05-20), Brett Terpstra (1 — nvALT rescue tool), The Eclectic Light Company (1 — Immutable file flag), Hacker News — Show HN (5 — Helios, Continue Y/N, EzFurigana, TV Explorer, Hallucinate), Wallpaper* Travel (5 — RockRose Melides, Park Hyatt Tokyo reopening, Adam/Albin Stockholm, Serifos, Globe-Trotter Steamer Trunk), AFAR (2 — Amanvari, Uniworld Netherlands cruise), Boutique Homes (1 — Boat House Shelter Island), Cool Tools (2 — Tolstoy's Calendar of Wisdom, Peopleware), Kottke.org (4 — Infinite Jeffs, Merriam Backward Index, OK Computer N64 soundfonts, Fuel efficiency into Sun), Open Culture (5 — Acropolis 3D, Starry Night math, Berlin Wall summer 1989, MIT Limits to Growth, Robert Johnson restoration), Quote Investigator (4 — Clarke stepping stones, Ward listen-think, Garland lips-soul, Jolly physics-discovered), A.Word.A.Day (1 — JFK unpleasant facts), The Marginalian (4 — Camus three antidotes, Jiménez Platero, Hesse not-to-know, Thoreau lovers), MoMA Design Store (3 — Sunography, Guerilla Art Guide, EdgeFlow scissors), Recomendo (3 — Majestic Studios, Chloe VS History, Desperate Oasis card game), icanhazdadjoke (7).
**Blocked: Reddit JSON endpoint is hard-blocked this run.** All four r/* sources (r/macapps, r/shortcuts, r/BuyItForLife, r/dadjokes) returned a 189908-byte HTML payload (Reddit's new beta web UI) regardless of UA, URL pattern (top.json vs top/.json), or origin (old.reddit.com vs www.reddit.com). Sequential 60-second delay didn't recover; this looks IP-level rather than rate-limit. **Action: switch to OAuth Reddit API for the next run, or accept Reddit as a fully-blocked source until network conditions change.** Tried alternate URLs and a "daily-finds-skill/1.0" UA — all returned the same HTML payload of the same size.
Other blocked or empty: TidBITS (403 to WebFetch — still), Web Curios (ECONNREFUSED to homepage; no recent issue URL found at expected 22/05/26, 28/05/26, 29/05/26 paths), Things Magazine (no new post since May 15 — confirming the monthly-ish cadence), Atlas Obscura (no fresh content; falling back to evergreen), This Is Why I'm Broke / Cool Material / StyleForum / Unusual Hotels of the World / A Continuous Lean (all the same template/dormancy issues from prior runs).

### Hero coverage
Heroes saved: ~25 of 35 attempted (the 7 jokes and 12 quote/etymology/essay finds are text-only by convention and excluded). Misses (~10): bbedit-16 (no og:image on barebones.com — the site is server-rendered HTML with no social meta), aluminium-os (no og:image), hallucinate-mmo-rave (JS-rendered, no og), helios-uk-solar (no og), ok-computer-n64-soundfonts (kottke fallback to text), infinite-jeffs (kottke fallback to text), nvalt-rescue-tool (Brett's OG was 2453 bytes, likely the favicon — removed).
Pattern notes this run:
- **Reddit JSON appears to be fully blocked for this network/IP**: identical 189908-byte HTML response across all four r/* subreddits and all alternate URL patterns. This is distinct from rate-limiting (which produces variable-size responses). Likely the unauthenticated `.json` endpoint requires an authenticated UA now. The previous run's mitigation suggestion (extract previews from `top` listing JSON at scan time) is moot if the JSON endpoint itself is gone. **Next-pass mitigation: register a Reddit OAuth app and authenticate scrape requests; until then Reddit is a fully-blocked source.**
- **Kottke OG image quality is inconsistent**: some posts (`merriam-backward-index`, the Pittock-Mansion-adjacent Tolkien post) deliver clean OG images; others (`infinite-jeffs`, `ok-computer-n64-soundfonts`) fall back to a generic Kottke-site OG or no OG at all. The pattern doesn't correlate with post type. No clean rule — just accept the loss.
- **Open Culture OG coverage is universal**: all 5 Open Culture captures returned clean OG images, mostly the article's lead image at 600-1000px wide. The only consistently-productive non-Apple-platform source for hero coverage this run.
- **Wallpaper* OG coverage remains rock-solid** (5/5 this run), as does AFAR (2/2), MoMA (3/3), Boutique Homes (1/1 — the Shelter Island house OG returned at 2972047 bytes / 2.9 MB, which is large enough to warrant a re-encode pass before promoting to a review).
### New source nominees
5 this run (see candidate-sources.md):
- South London Scientific — applied-physics independent studio (Helios solar calculator)
- Majestic Studios (Jonathan Laramime) — AI-history reconstruction YouTube
- Chloe VS History — Chloe satire-history YouTube (same creator)
- Manuel Bravo — Spanish architect's classical-building 3D explanations on YouTube
- Studio Jouin Manku — high-end hospitality design studio (Park Hyatt Tokyo reopening)
### Source maintenance notes for next prune
- **Reddit OAuth integration is now urgent**: 4 of the most productive sources (r/macapps, r/shortcuts, r/BuyItForLife, r/dadjokes) are blocked simultaneously. Until OAuth is set up, the find pipeline loses 15-25 captures per run. The 2026-05-20 maintenance note suggested switching to listing-JSON extraction — confirmed insufficient now since the JSON endpoint itself is unreachable.
- **Web Curios needs a fresh URL pattern**: homepage ECONNREFUSED this run, and the expected newsletter URL pattern (/webcurios-DD-MM-YY/) didn't resolve for May 22 / 28 / 29. The newsletter may be on a cadence break or have moved hosts. Skip until the source is verified live.
- **A Continuous Lean confirmed dormant 9th run**: still SIGNALS #151 from Dec 2025. The 2026-05-13 maintenance note's `fetch: skip` recommendation is **overdue**. Apply.
- **Atlas Obscura remains stale-but-not-blocked**: same evergreen 2017-2018 articles surfacing as on 2026-05-20. The `cadence: as-needed` flag from prior run is still pending; with three consecutive runs of zero captures, this is at the line for `fetch: skip`.
## 2026-05-31 — review: continue-y-n-game
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-30, source: Hacker News — Show HN.
Hero: single-image — pulled from `llmgame.scalex.dev/continuegame.png` (1252×832, 100 KB), the page's canonical og:image. Single-image format matches the cursor-camp precedent for browser-game reviews.
Category: `play` (same new category started with cursor-camp-neal-fun; the 2026-05-14 six-browser-games bundle still has 4 unbundled candidates that would graduate cleanly into the same category).
Editorial correction: the find's body described the antagonist as "an AI agent" generically; the actual game (per its own meta tags) names Claude Code by name. The review surfaces that detail because the joke lands sharper with the specific brand attribution — and because half this site's audience runs Claude Code.
## 2026-05-31 — review: remctl-reminders-cli
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-30, source: MacStories.
Hero: reused the find's existing hero.png — the MacStories OG card (809 KB, terminal screenshot of `remctl today` output). Single-image review.
Category: `automation` (existing — fits the smartmover-shortcut precedent for automation-driven utilities).
Editorial note: the body leans on Viticci's own quote ("If you can do something in Apple's Reminders app, you — or your agent — can do it with RemCTL") because it's both honest and exactly the right framing for the audience. Surfaced the private-API caveat — Reminders' internal SQLite storage is the source of truth RemCTL reads, and a Tahoe-26.6 or 26.7 release could require maintenance.
## 2026-05-31 — review: editorio
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-20, source: r/macapps.
Hero: reused the find's existing hero.jpeg — a 1200×630 Reddit-rendered OG card (11 KB, small file but proper dimensions). No homepage was findable for the app (editorio.app/.com both unresolved), so I couldn't grab a richer screenshot from the dev. Used `astro:assets` Image import + `<Image>` because the existing review's Markdown-image syntax has been silently rendering tiny on JPG sources — the explicit component handles the responsive srcset correctly.
Category: `writing` (existing — same bucket as apex-markdown-processor, antinote, cotypist, flux-markdown).
Editorial caveat: the dev posted only to r/macapps with no website or docs. The review acknowledges that the app is essentially a single-screenshot indie release and recommends LSP-required workflows stay on VS Code / Zed. Worth re-visiting when an Editorio homepage actually launches.
## 2026-05-31 — review: muxy-terminal
Graduated from find captured 2026-05-20, source: r/macapps.
Hero: fresh screenshot from `github.com/user-attachments/assets/721c6b4a-bd9c-4e4e-ade0-cd2597399801` (the README's only embedded image; 3004×1846, 350 KB) — pulled via the public github user-attachments URL which redirects to S3 cleanly. Replaced the find's Reddit-preview hero. Single-image review.
Category: `terminal` (existing — same bucket as gum-shell).

Editorial correction: the find massively undersold this. Original framing was "a terminal with a sidebar for projects" — actual product is a native SwiftUI workspace with Git tooling (status/diff/branches/PRs/worktrees), file tree, find-in-files, command palette, markdown/Mermaid preview, image viewer, 490+ themes, AI usage tracking, plus iOS and Android companion apps for remote command execution. The blockquote summary explicitly calls out the correction ("Muxy is not 'a terminal with a sidebar,' which is how the original Reddit post — and our find capture — sold it"). MIT-licensed; `brew install --cask muxy`. Per user direction, review's `link` field points to `github.com/muxy-app/muxy` rather than the original Reddit thread the find captured.

## 2026-07-03 — cluster run (backlog catch-up)
Wrote 8 bundles from the unbundled pool of 507 finds (369 May + 138 June); 53 finds covered, 0 reuses (all items previously unbundled), no duplicates across the new bundles.
Bundles created:
- 2026-07-03-the-useful-menagerie: The useful menagerie (7 items — Kikkerland animal-anatomy-as-function objects)
- 2026-07-03-who-actually-said-that: Who actually said that (7 items — quote-provenance detective work)
- 2026-07-03-the-completists: The completists (7 items — obsessive single-subject catalogs)
- 2026-07-03-ambient-data: Ambient data (8 items — live data rendered as art)
- 2026-07-03-made-on-the-old-machines: Made on the old machines (6 items — deliberately unmodernized clothing workshops)
- 2026-07-03-never-out-of-production: Never out of production (5 items — design classics still shipping)
- 2026-07-03-six-groans-third-serving: Six groans, third serving (6 items — dad jokes round 3)
- 2026-07-03-nothing-to-win-here: Nothing to win here (7 items — goalless browser toys)
Notes: pool remains large (~454 finds still unbundled) — future daily runs bundle from the shortlist so the backlog stops growing; monthly cluster runs can keep chipping at the remainder. Deliberately skipped a second same-maker item in two cases (Wonder Looper, Hendrix Park) to keep bundles varied.
Infrastructure note: bundle mosaics had been silently broken since the May date-bucketing migration — scripts/build-bundle-mosaics.mjs still looked up heroes at the old flat find path, so every mosaic was skipped as "no heroes". Fixed (recursive year/month/slug index + avif support); all 24 hero-bearing bundles regenerated.

## 2026-07-03 — review: tldraw
Graduated from find captured on 2026-06-21, source: Uses This.
Hero: clean flat in-browser screenshot of tldraw.com (full toolbar + style panel + canvas), pulled from tldraw's own blog CDN. Rejected the find hero, og:image, and GitHub README heroes — all plain wordmark logos; tldraw.dev marketing shots were angled 3D renders.
Category: planning (existing) — closest "organize/think" bucket; consider a dedicated canvas/drawing category if more of these accumulate.
Fact-check: claim held ("open a tab and draw, no account" verified). Enriched with the dual nature the find missed — free hosted whiteboard vs. the tldraw React canvas SDK (~48k stars; Google/Shopify/Autodesk/ClickUp). Corrected licensing: SDK is source-available under the proprietary tldraw license (not MIT) — free in dev, paid key for commercial production, watermark otherwise. Added honest limits (freehand not auto-layout; local-first storage loss risk).

Amazon: n-a (web tool).

## 2026-07-03 — review: kartell-componibili-2-tier-storage
Graduated from find captured on 2026-06-21, source: MoMA Design Store.
Hero: reused the find's own hero.jpg — clean 2040×2040 burgundy studio product shot from MoMA Design Store, no overlay; checked Kartell/MoMA for a better shot, none warranted.
Category: design (new).
Fact-check: find held up on designer (Anna Castelli Ferrieri), material (ABS), and MoMA collection; corrected stale "55 years" to fifty-seven and added the 1967–68 square-precursor nuance (round version is 1969).
Amazon: added — amazon.com/dp/B00967MX3A (genuine Kartell 4966/03, sold by Amazon, $212). First find/review pair to exercise the amazonLink field. Carried to both frontmatters.

## 2026-07-03 — pick of the day: kartell-componibili-2-tier-storage

Chosen over tldraw for tile legibility and variety: a striking studio product shot after a run of app/browser-game heroes, and the virtue ("1969, never revised, still shipping") reads instantly from the subtitle.
